when you see it...

more reason that runners won't hear us....

worst is the folks on bikes who use ear buds.

they have a Lance Armstrong collection too - among other Nike idols - Rinaldo, etc.

what's so bad about listening to tunes while you ride?
it doesn't exactly block out all other sound.

it's dangerous...

...to you and to others. i have permanent chainring marks on my chins because some clown wearing headphones going the wrong way didn't hear me yelling and whistling.

it's all about safety. it's also against the law to have both buds in your ears.

I am given to understand that listening to headphones while riding lowers your reaction time so even if the volume on your portable player is low enough that you can hear external sounds, you won't be able to react to situations as quickly as someone not listening to music could.

i can also vouch for the fact that...

"...listening to music through headphones is dangerous even when laying on the asphalt after a collision...poor guy didn't hear my miller-crit/mogema/hyper 5-wheel speedskate coming when i kicked him in the face. i bet that's the last time he ever rode with headphones. ;^)
