Hi all,

Just an alert. Colleen and I were cross back over the North side of the GWB bridge (Tues. about 10 AM) and encountered some police on cycles on the NJ side. We rode behind them to the NY side and took all the stairs and road around Cabrini to get back, as they watched us, stopped, on the NY side. They were camped out there, apparently, waiting for someone to ride up the ramp, trying to skip the stairs on the NY side.

As we went down Washington Heights Blvd. toward the hospital, we saw some cyclists getting ready to turn to the bridge, going up the ramp to skip the first set of stairs. We yelled a few times at them to watch out, but they didn't seem to hear.

Don't know if anyone will be ticketed for trying to skip the stairs, but we thought we'd like to know if this was happening, hence this note on the message board.

Which police dept?

Were they actual NY, NJ police or private security hired for the bridge? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under impress that NJ police does not have jurisdiction to hand out tickets in NY and vice versa.

Port Authority Police

"David wrote ""some police"" located in NJ. Most likely they are Port Authority police"

NYPD

Their uniforms had a big NYPD on the back. Not NJ and not Port Authority. Same guys you seen on bikes in CP.

I was wondering why it seemed so dangerous. I didn't realize I had skipped some stairs. when you go under the overpass where the station is, where do you go to avoid the on ramp? straight through that light? (this past weekend was my first visit to that side of the bridge.)

I ended up walking my bike along the on-ramp until I got to the light because it seemed insanely dangerous now I see why!

stairs

Not sure which light you mean but the safe and long way is to turn left on the one way street (just past the on ramp) and go down the hill. There are stairs going up and down and then up again....

I remember that is was a one way (I don't like riding against traffic) hence the reason I took the on ramp on the way out.

thanks for the info. I'll look closely this weekend and hopefully figure it out. I don't need a ticket that's for sure!

The street is one way going down the hill, so if you're heading out to NJ you wouldn't be against traffic. It's only when you return that you would be traveling against traffic, or else, going around the block. Anyway, good luck!
