I'm spending several days in Port Jeff this week and will try to get in a couple of 20-30 mile rides.

There are a lot of cue sheets that leave from the city in our Ride Library. But before I print them all out, can anyone suggest one or two routes that I could modify for a Port Jeff start? Or a general loop? I of course have maps.

Also, any fancy restaurant recommendations? I will have access to a car. How is Danford's in the harbor?

Thanks.

restaurant rec

You asked for fancy. Mirabelle Restaurant might be the best restaurant on LI. You'll need a reservation which might not be available on short notice. It's about 7 miles away.

Wow!

I'll see if it's in my friend's budget. I live cheaply 364 days out of the year, so I would love to go.

Thanks.

ice cream!

I do believe that Long Island's biggest ice cream parlor is in Port Jeff. I've never been there, but I read about it somewhere and it stuck in my head. Please report back!

For rides, get the Long Island bike map from LI DOT and follow the through roads as close to the north shore as possible. I did that once and found it quite lovely. When I was on the train with my bike, someone told me that there's good mountain biking nearby as well.

Sorry for all this vagueness and hearsay, but I know you'll figure it out.

Ice cream

The ice cream shop is right by the ferry, at the intersection of 25A and Main St. The sign outside says 40 flavors. It was either too early or too late for ice cream when we passed by, although I know I was there once, a hundred years ago with the 5BBC.

We had a pleasant meal at Danford's across the street, looking out at the harbor at sunset. A little overpriced for what it is, but the setting is nice. Will have to get to Mirabelle another time.

The Long Island bike map has some nice routes. I got out for only a quick spin, but that's better than nuthin'!

Belle Terre/ Old Field

Head North to Belle Terre. It's hilly with sound side views. Also ride West and then North to the Old Field Lighthouse.
