"While I know going to the local shop would be the proper way of doing it, I am trying to get my bike set up just so for the summer and am looking for some advice. I won an '04 Fuji Team road bike a few years back for dressing as a tampon in a Halloween costume contest in Moab (yes, one of my best strokes of luck, but not the point of this post), and it has never quite felt right on me. It is a 54 and has always seemed small (I'm 5'10"").
I know that it can be incredibly complex, but I am wondering if anybody can summarize any general rules beyond guessing and checking on setting up seat height, seat position on the rails, cleat placement, stem, etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I still think ""Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Bicycling"" is the gold standard on bike fit (yes, I'm getting old). I've used its guidelines my whole cycling life and I've never had discomfort or a fit-related injury.

Lemond is a whippersnapper. I started with:

but the first edition.

The ""online fit calculators"" should be taken with a grain of salt. Fit is not as simple as taking measurements and plugging them into formulas. You must take your own preferences and flexibility into account.
BTW, if your bike feels too small, it just might be.

Which, the tampon costume or the bicycle? Just wondering.
