Hey folks,

I have a set of low end bontrager wheels that were standard on my 2002 Lemond which I bought used last summer.

I have about 3K on them and un sure of the rider who sold them.

The rear hub is not free spinning as well as it should and after an adjustment ( or what they can do) the thought is to replace the rear.

Should I buy a set or simply just the rear wheel.

I was looking at a Mavic OPen Pro w/Ultegra hub
32 lace since I am 210 lbs.

By the way my Bontrager low end is 28 and has taking my commutes, rides and usual city cr...p with no issues at all.

Thoughts???
Comments???
Abuse???

Thanks

Robert

Depends how concerned you are about style. I'd just replace the one that needs replacing.

There's no advantage to low spoke count wheels for most riders. Ultegra hub is a good choice. Open Pro is ok, but Velocity rims will probably work better. DT butted 14-15-14 gauge spokes. And most importantly find someone who can properly build, tension, and stress relieve the wheels. Don't rule out a 36 spoke wheel.

Of course I would like the set to match, but
I figure any savings would go to my future bike.

Regarding the Velocity rims, where can I get them?

My Bontrager rear is a 28 and never a truing or broken spoke issue.

I have one

Rob, I have a spare rear wheel at home. Mavic Open Pro; 700c; Ultegra hubs; probably 32 spoke (I'll have to count; needs truing. Don't remember what the cassette is, probably 9-speed 12-27.

I rode it about 2 years, should have lots of life left in it.

Contact me offline if interested.

low spoke count wheels

I have a set of Bontrager low spoke count wheels - standard with my 2003 Lemond.

To true these wheels, I need a magician. Also, during a weekend trip, the weight of the panniers caused a blow-out.

IMHO, for my Reynolds 853 steel bike, there are NO advantages to low spoke counts.

If you are riding a steel frame, consider replacing both wheels. Performance and Nashbar sell several models of paired wheels in the $125+ range.

I use Aero 36 spoke wheels. They didn't cost a lot, handle Manhattan streets, and easy to true.
