... a cue sheet from the GWB to South Orange, NJ (or close by)? My husband and I want to ride out there for a BBQ. Thanks.

There is no remotely direct way to get to South Orange by bicycle without taking your life into your hands from NYC.
Motoring on such roads is not much fun either. Instead, take the PATH train out to Newark and then route your very short ride to South Orange, NJ.

Wrong

"""There is no remotely direct way to get to South Orange by bicycle without taking your life into your hands from NYC.""

You are wrong.

Betsy,

Yes, I do have a cue sheet, which I can send you. I've ridden from the George Washington Bridge through South Orange twice this year. Very pleasant ride. The only busy road that my route takes is Route 46, just to cross the Hackensack River, a distance of about 0.4 mile, and even there, the traffic is light on a weekend morning."

Please send cue sheet

Thanks Mordecai. I wasn't ready to give up that easily. My email address is [email protected].

One more question We probably won't want to ride back that night. Do we need any special passes to take our bikes on NJ Transit? Thanks for your help.

Getting back

You don't need a pass for NJ Transit. Just don't take your bike during rush hour.

Or you could ride to Newark from South Orange and take PATH into the city.

U.S. Highway Route 46

Maybe it helps that you ride on Sunday in a blue-sky law state as Rte 46, is a highway lined with strip malls and many bus stops. Please send me a cue sheet. I'm curious to see what you have mapped out. Thanks.

Route 46

"Did you read what I wrote? I'm only on Route 46 (Winant Ave) to cross the Hackensack River, a very short distance. I turn onto it just before the bridge, and as soon as I cross, I turn left on Bergen Turnpike. Besides, I don't even ride on the road itself over the bridge, but on the sidewalk. Not because the traffic is so bad, but because of the expansion joints on the bridge. It's rather like crossing the Broadway Bridge. I wouldn't hesitate to ride that stretch during rush hour on a weekday afternoon.

My route is just one way of several. You can ride west from Fort Lee into Hackensack on Fort Lee Rd, then head south, for example."

Yes, Mordecai, I did read what you wrote very carefully. You only ride it for 0.4 miles near the river. I presume you do so only on a Sunday hence my reply. Until I see the cue sheet, there's not much more information I can comment on. I'm still waiting for it. Thank you.

me too please

Mordecai,

Please send me one too. I work in S. Orange and have long wanted a route there, but have never taken time to map one out. I'd love to see yours.

route database

I agree with Mordecai that it's possible to have a mostly pleasant ride from the GWB to South Orange. I did it once (to one of the Oranges, anyway) using a route from http://www.panix.com/~danielc/routes/. After the barbecue I'd ridden to, I rode to Newark and took the PATH home.
