Hey all,

Fellow A-19 sigee MJ and I will be co-leading our first ride and we wanted to invite you all to join us.

It's the Montauk Century, and you'll need to register for it soon as prices are going up and return train rides may be running out.

Check out the ride listing for a full description (May 21st, 2006). We already have a group of 6 and we hope this number will grow. Email me to let me know if you'll be joining us!

-Richard

More on Montauk Century

What a great idea Richard! Welcome!

Richard is correct -- the price of the ride goes UP $10 at 11:59 p.m. on May 10, so if you want to ride, now is an excellent time to sign up. All the details and on-line registration at:

Oh, and don't forget to check out this great article on how the NYCC created the ride!

History

I seem to recall that NYCC also pioneered the ""Riverhead-to-Riverhead"" ride along the north and south forks of LI and Shelter Island (later known as Bike-Boat-Bike). Can any old-timers verify that?

I had all intentions of doing the 120+ miles, but $65 for a cue sheet and a return train ride is a little excessive IMHO

Price of the Montauk Century

"Hey Paul,

Glen here -- the tour director for the Montauk Century.

I must disagree with your statement that ""$65 for a cue sheet and a return train ride is a little excessive, IMHO."" The public roads are always there for free. If paying for a group ride isn't your thing, well, nothing wrong with that.

If a cue sheet was all you were getting, I would agree. Here's what that fee actually covers:

o Insurance

o S.A.G. vehicles, including S.A.G. on Demand, probably our biggest expense (yeah, yeah, I know... YOU won't need S.A.G. service -- until your crank arm picks that day to snap, or you bust a cassette-side spoke, or your chain breaks, or a derrailier cable snaps or ...)

o Post-ride meal

o Hot showers at the finish line

o Rest stops every 25 miles or less. Not your usual powerbar and a cup of water -- our rest stops feature foccachia from Balthazar bakery, ice cream, fresh strawberries or grapes (whichever looks best in the market), sports drink, Clovervale's famous peanut butter and jelly bars...

o Shuttle service to take a piece of luggage to the finish line for you so you can change.

o Free massage at the finish line.

o Free custom-made SockGuy padded racing socks for the first 1,200 to register (and they are GONE!)

o And all those things that cost us a fortune -- walkie-talkie rental, portable toilet rental, permits, paramedics...

If that's not for you, that's fine. But if you know I way to provide the same level of service for less dough, I'd like to hear about it!

BTW, I will never (NEVER) turn someone away from a ride just because cash is tight -- I will find a volunteer position (or create one) so they can help out and still ride.

Best,

Glen Goldstein/tour director

Hi Glenn and thanks for your response. I apologize for my message; I did not mean to malign the ride or its organizers.

I have done the ride twice before and loved it both times. However, since then, I have been doing longer rides, all of which were solo and unsupported. So, many of the amenities that you provide are things that I just don't need (ok, the ice cream, fresh strawberries and grapes do sound REALLY good).

Cheers,

Paul

140 miles or 100 miles?

Just a quick clarification: Is the A19 you are leading involve the route starting in Manhattan (140 mils or so), or the 100-mile Long Island start?

100 miles

Hey Greg, we're doing the 100 mile route, Babylon start. (And planning to take it at a moderate pace, as some of us will have done Bear Mountain the day before.) Check out the ride listings for a write-up and contact info.

the first 40 miles?

I've never done the Montauk Century - what are the first 40 miles like of the long route?

I'm not being snide - I truly don't know the route and I'm not familiar with getting out to Babylon are they junk miles on torn up roads?

"Speaking as the tour director of the 2006 ride, an event I take tremendous pride in... the first 40 miles are just junk miles on torn up roads!

I can't deny that there is a lot of satisfaction in pedaling all the way from Manhattan to Montauk, but those first 40 miles feature some of NYCs worst scenery and roadways. We have re-routed it over and over to try to improve this section each year, but...

Separately, having pedaled many century rides, I have never done 100 miles and then said, ""Damn! If only there was some way I could pedal another 45 miles...""

Having said all of that, we get several hundred people every year who do the 145 route, and they love it. I'm honored to have them along -- they are stronger riders than I am!

Best,

Glen/tour director

Wake up time?

The key is what time do you mind waking up in the morning? The new 100-mile start time is God-awful early in my opinion, not to mention dicey if you have to ride to the start line. That extra hour of sleep or so seems better to me. I’ll take the extra 40 miles—potholes be damned.
