Trying to find Sandy Hook or environs routes that begin & end at a Manhattan ferry dock, 50 miles or so. The ride library doesn't seem to help. Ideas anyone?

TIA.

Sea rides

Alfredo Garcia has led club C rides from Sandy Hook in the past. His routes were a bit less than 50, about 25 miles, if I remember correctly.

Evan,

John Z has created a wonderful flat century that starts at the ferry. You could easily shorten it at a number of points. There are a few insignificant rollers at the start.

Sal and I did it on fixed gears last summer--it was very meditative. I would like to do the ride again but on a Sunday, when I suspect the car traffic may be a little less intense.

I've emailed you the cue sheet and map, but you should thank John instead of me!

Rides from Atlantic Highlands

I have a nice century route that goes through the horse country of Colt's Neck and toward Howell and back. I could fax you the cue sheet. It starts right near the ferry terminal in Atlantic Highlands.

Routes from NJ side of Monmouth County ferry

"Bike NY, which does the 5 borough bike tour & the harlem rail trail ride, runs a ""Twin Lights"" multi-distance 1 day event in Monmouth county, starting by the ferry.

Check their website for routes?? Or if you like, I organized the rolling marshalls for them several years agao and have the cue sheets and can fax.

Best,
Susan

ferries & trains to the Hook

Hi,

Some people like to ride to Nyack every weekend. I'm one of the few who wish to do the same--but to Sandy Hook. It's a really beautiful place to bike and take in the lush & invigorating surroundings.

Direct ferry cruises to the Hook happen mid-June until Labor Day, weekends. Seastreak and NY Waterway offer them, but only round-trip. Earliest boat is 9am. Last year, most of those cruises were sold out (too popular and too romantic--see couples; I had to cancel group rides as a result). In the past they used to have available tickets at the last moment.

Pity ferry companies are not flexible. But they need to make money & use gasoline to justify it.

Year long, Seastreak has a commuter route from Pier 11.

If you ride during the week, NY Waterway has early morning commuter boats (only weekdays) to Belford, NJ, from Pier 11 in Manhattan. It's near the Henry Hudson Rail Trail, a beautiful greenway with several wooden bridges. You can take it to Atlantic Highlands and Highlands. Check www.nywaterway.com for details.

By the way, you can ride either on the roads or greenways of Sandy Hook, although the park rangers prefer you go on the latter.

There is a time trial races on the Hook. You can go 20+mph cruising speed from the toll booth to the end. Going back however, you deal with headwinds:

There's always next year....

If you have routes in hand, you can take a NJ Transit train from Manhattan to approximate spots close (Red Bank, Matawan) at least 12 miles away) to the Hook. Then take the Highlands boat coming back. And it's too bad Staten Island's Goethals Bridge bike path is still out since 1996..

If you can wait in Sept., you can do the Twin Lights ride from Highlands. They offer routes from 25-100 miles. I did the century and it was cool.

Hope this helps,
Alfredo
