River Road Update

I spoke to the receptionist at the Palisades Interstate Park New Jersey Section, the southern part of Henry Hudson Drive is still closed for repaving and should reopen before the weekend.

I rode it on Sunday -- the gate at the south end was closed, but no one stopped us the entire length, and there wasn't a single car for the entire stretch.

Repaving is finished

I rode the newly repaved stretch from the southern entrance today with a friend. It's good to go!

A fact that's new to me

"The steep hill that winds its way down from the east end of Palisade Ave. in Englewood Cliffs (off-limit to cyclists) is called Dyckman Hill Road.

South end closed on Tuesday

The southern entrance was closed this morning and we were stopped by construction workers from entering on the south end.

Oddly, we didn't see any construction in progress or even any construction equipment when we crossed over River Road on the GWB this morning. I look forward to that stretch being repaved, but it doesn't seem to be progressing with any speed.

Dyckman Hill was open, though still technically off-limits to bicycles as always.

I road on River Road today. At the entrance south of the GWB, a construction worker said we could not enter there as they are repaving the section from the entrance to the first traffic circle (thankfully, as that's the worst part.) He did say we could enter at the other end (i.e. from Alpine Approach off of 9W) and ride down to that traffic circle and back, which we did (the gates are closed to car traffic, but apparently it's no problem for bicyclists to be on it). He also said the construction would be finished by Friday, so it should not interfere with the weekend rides, including the B SIG rides which plan to do River Road as part of the ride.

With all the talk about River Road and the climbing it entails I am envisioning Alpe d'Huez. I can't wait to get out their and rip on Saturday.

Alpine d'Huez

"We call it ""Alpine d'Huez"". It's not as tough as the similarly named mountain in France - but a mile at 7% is challenging enough for me."

But if you ride the Alpine Hill starting from the boat docks, you get an honest to god switchback, which Alp d'Huez is famous for.

River Road has been repaved

The repaving of the south end of River Road has been completed. It's pretty smooth all the way now except for the nothernmost mile. The hill. The gate at the south end is still closed but you can go around it. Many cyclists were riding there this evening.

Didn't seem to be

Dozens of bikes riding there today. New pavement is great. But they were working on the top of the police station hill. Looked like they are putting in more drainage. Dotted line down the road. Maybe they will even pave that section when they are done!

Saturday - Turned Back at Englewood

Today the B-SIG headed to River Road. We entered at the south entrance and rode on the new pavement with joy. However, the first groups climbed the first hill in Englewood Cliffs and got to the barrier that is easy to ride around. Apparently there was a police officer there who turned riders back, warning them of tickets if they were to go north or go up Dyckman Hill Road. When our group arrived ten or fifteen minutes later, there was no officer, but the threat still hung in the air, so we turned around. It was a beautiful day nonetheless, but no climb to Alpine.
