Hi all,
About 30 years ago I used to repair my own bike and the bikes of others (my first teenage job), but things have changed a good bit since then and I think I need an update. Could folks recommend a bike repair book (or books) that covers repairs. For those who don't know me, I'm a road bike rider.
Thanks in advance for the help!
David
Query r.e. Bicycle Repair Books
The Rob van der Plas manuals are pretty decent, if you're looking for a single-volume paperback manual. They do presume that you have some familiarity with the overall systems used to operate a bicycle. http://www.cyclepublishing.com/cyclingbooks/brss.html There is also a mountain bike specific one.
Also, the Park Tool website has excellent step-by-step instructions for most repair and replace jobs. http://www.parktool.com/repair/
If you want the ne plus ultra of bicycle repair books, you want the Barnett's Manual (http://www.bbinstitute.com/manual.htm) which is $115 for hardcopy and $85 for download. It includes everything from replacing a brake cable to rebuilding a Sturmey Archer AW-3 to repairing hydraulic brake systems to overhauling cup and cone bottom brackets and hubs. I don't need to reference mine all that often, but when I do, it's indispensable.

Lennard Zinn, who builds frames and writes technical articles for Velo News, has books on road and MTB bike repair. I have both and can recommend them:
http://www.zinncycles.com/books.aspx?book=roadbike
bike repair chapters in these books:
Complete Bike Book Chris Sidwell
Bicycling For Dummies Allen St. John
Effective Cycling John Forester
These chapters are pretty clear but I'll never be a bike techie
