Here come the SIG, here come the SIG! Tomorrow, Saturday, March 4th, 8:30 AM registration, 9:00 AM orientation takes place at the Blessed Sacrament School, West 70th Street (north side), between Broadway and Columbus Avenue. The 20th Anniversay of the SIG! The registration and orientation happen no matter if there's rain, snow, sleet, hail, whatever. Be there or be square!

The ride is another thing. I saw the weather forecast for Saturday and thought no problem, it'll be a nice winter day, a good day to get some easy miles in, a good day to get on the road and start meeting my new friends. I'm not so sure now. I've been hearing that maybe it'd be better to postpone the ride till Sunday. Start the ride at 10:00 AM Sunday instead of going out Saturday. That perhaps there'll be ice on the road tomorrow, that perhaps it will be dangerous. I don't like dangerous. No one likes dangerous. Do you think it will be dangerous tomorrow? Can we play it by ear and make a last minute decision? Does that mess up people's plans? Would people be able to come in for the orientation Saturday and then be able to get back for a ride Sunday? We don't have a choice with the orientation, we own the room for the day. That can't be changed.

Please feel free to share your thoughts about this here. Don't be offended but annonymous postings will not be considered. No politics here, no commentary about the pros/cons of annonymous postings intended.

Sunday

According to weather.com, it's not suppossed to get above freezing before noon on Saturday. I'd say let's give the ice a bit of a chance to melt and ride on Sunday. Cold weather doesn't bother me, but ice does. I'd rather take my studded tires out for a romp in the park than ride in a group with ice covered roads.

I would ride on Saturday though if that was the consensus. I'd prefer a last minute decision to be made no later than 7am though. I'd rather know whether or not we're riding before I leave my home at 730.

Kay
I thought you were in Majorca. Are you doing the Classic or the A 19?

back from Mallorca

I altered my plans so I could be back in time for the first ride and orientation. 2 weeks of Peloton riding with crazy fast French people has prepared me to attempt the A Classic.

Great!
I'm looking forward to riding with you.
Just promise you won't drop me!

There's not much chance I will be dropping anyone in the Classic! I'm looking forward to trying to hang with you guys.

Either day works for me (Sunday actually works a bit better). It's going to be cold either day, so that doesn't matter to me, but let's avoid the ice! My only request is that you make the call sooner rather than later (today?), as I need to rearrange some of my plans on Sunday, if we are going to switch. I look forward to the ride (whichever day it is).

Saturday Orientation - Sunday Ride

A forecast of 27 degrees at 9am Saturday is a convincing reason to ride on Sunday.

Windy

Tomorrow's forcast, besides cold in the high 20's, includes wind with gusts 20-30 mph! How about Sunday Christy??

forecast

Accuweather is predicting about the same temp both days - mid to high 30's, slightly less windy on Sunday, but not much of a difference. The main issue is whether roads will be less icy on Sunday. Whatever is decided, it would be very helpful for this weekend if it could be called today rather than in the morning. Thanks.

melting

The thing is that it's not supposed to get above freezing before noon on Sat. If we ride on Sunday, we'll at least benefit from melting on Saturday.

Hi Christy!

I can ride Saturday or Sunday (both days are supposed to be cold- so Im not sure how much snow melt we will get on Saturday to greatly improve conditions on Sunday).

Do we have to attend the orientation...

...if we have registered online already?

I have done the A-Sig before, in 2002, so I am familiar with the rules.

Thanks, hope for 33+ degrees at 8am.

I'll ride either day, but 3/4 is the one Saturday ...

... I don't have someone to cover me at work, so I'd want to get back ASAP.

A Sunday, 3/5 ride works out much more better. I could even get in some post-SIG mileage.

Great Neile, I'm glad to hear you'll be out there with us. Also glad to hear you got that work thing straightened out.
You're going to love the SIG!

going against the flow

I also made my plans based on a good forecast for Saturday, including having five 11 year old boys sleeping at our house on Saturday night for my son's birthday. So, if the roads are okay, I'd much prefer Saturday (much as I'd love to get out of the house on Sunday morning!) If we go with Sunday, it'll complicate things a good bit for me. But, I'll adjust if necessary.

Is this the same Colleen that I know? I hope so!!! I'd like to have more people in the SIG that I've already ridden with!!! I'm really looking forward to the SIG :)

It looks like we are going to find out tomorrow whether we are riding Sat or Sun (doesn't matter to me, both days will be AWFULLY cold (I don't know how I'll survive)--but I'm planning to tough it out regarless of the temps, the offseason is over, back to hard training).

Btw for what it's worth, I ran a loop of Central Park this AM b4 work, and it's all completely (north, south, east, west) covered with ice. I'm definitely planning to be super careful--black ice scares me!

Safe to bike over to the Sat. meeting?

Hi, I'm signed up for the A-19 Sig (i'm guessing this thread also covers what happens with the A-19) and this is my first year living in sub-freezing weather, I'm originally from Florida, so I'm not too keen on cycling with the threat of ice.

My question is: I live over on the UES and was planning on biking over to the meeting place, but I'm concerned with this whole talk about ice on the roads. Should I be concerned of slipping on ice if I try to bike over there tomorrow morning or should I be fine as long as I stick to riding on the manhattan streets? With it looking more and more like riding will be postponed until Sunday, is it better to play it safe and not bring the bike at all?

Thanks for the help I look forward to meeting many new faces! - Richard

Hey Richard,
This thread pertains only to the A Classic. The A 19 makes their plans independent of the A Classic. Best check with them to be sure what their thinking.

ice

I biked last night, this morning and will do it again later tonight for the commute home. Ice isn't a problem unless you're biking near the curb or if you're riding over virgin snow that has iced. I don't see either scenario existing in CP or the sections we'll be on, especially if cars have been in the park over the last two days.

I'm with majority ....

"Hello, I am a newbie and just signed up with the group. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you but have to admit, I am concerned about the ""black ice"" situation -- the cold temps, I can handle. I will leave it up to the group leader and veterans to make the final decision, but we reach it by this evening, so I can re-arrange my schedule if necessary. Thank you!"

I made plans

for Sunday (hosting family) but can attend the orientation tomorrow. Just my opinion but I don't think that there will be a huge ice difference between Sat. & Sun. I think we should either ride as planned or postpone (the ride part)

Best,
Matt

windy this weekend

I'm in agreement to hold off until Sunday for 2 reasons. 1) the wind and temp should be about the same as today (20's to 30's with wind at 20 to 30 mph). 2) Ice could be a dangerous factor. In which case I'm not willing to take that risk. I would prefer to give the ice some time to melt.

thanks,
Mark

ROADS ARE VERY ICY!!!

I drove around this evening after work to evaluate road conditions…there is lots of ice on 9W and 501…Same deal going to/from Westchester…I even got out of my car to make sure…I think it could be very dangerous…
