Does anyone know if the westside bike path (72nd - 23rd) is plowed or not?

BTW, I saw a small plow working the GW bridge pedestrian walkway, for those of you that might be tempted. Though I don't know if the path is actually ridable or not...

With the temperature shooting back up into the 50's tomorrow and Thursday, I'm sure I'm not the only one who are at least THINKING about riding again, provided the path/bridge are cleared of snow.

I rode down the bike path from 72nd to 26th St. this morning. Other than it being wet, it was fine. The path from the park at 72nd & Riverside down to the bike path was a little dicey because it hadn't been cleared but it was passable.

72nd st entrance

"I came to the opposite conclusion at the 72nd st. entrance.

The path has a couple inches of snow on it! So it's either walk your bike for a hundred yard or ride it VERY CAREFULLY. Not knowing if the stair (or the ramp) going down from the dog park to the bike path is passable or not, I opted to turn around.

Granted, I did my ""investigation"" in the dark, so it looked a more intimidating than perhaps what you find in daylight."

Sorry about that. Once you get passed the dog park it is mostly clear, you can certainly ride it from there. (I had the benefit of some daylight). When I got to the dog park I saw that there is another path that comes from a bit north on Riverside that was actually shoveled, I am going to try this route on my way home tonight.

GWB bike path

Looked down from the bus this morning. The GWB bike path has a narrow path plowed, but most of the melting is draining into that path. Might have to rename the GWB bike path, the GWB river.

Bueller?

I don't think that I can take another day of the subway. Does anyone know: Is the path clear and exactly how wet is it?

You have fenders, no?

At least on the path you aren't getting sprayed and splattered by every other passing car.

I was on it from Christopher St to the GW Bridge this afternoon. Lots of puddles. The path is narrowed in places and some areas of slush are crossing the path north of 94th St. The rise that goes under the West Side Hwy then climbs to the promenade around 92nd St is packed ice/slush. Around 158th St the path was incorrectly plowed so you are on mud for probably 20 yards. If it doesn't freeze tonight I would take Mordecai's advice and use fenders.

Bottom line: go for it.

Naturally, but fenders can't prevent salt spray completely. Christian was joking that no one should respond to my post because when I've made up my mind there's no stopping me. So, I'll be riding (Thanks Hank - your post is encourgaing)...and I'll let you know how it goes.

The Full Report

I rode from 89th Street down West End Avenue to 59th Street and entered the greenway at the waste transfer station. West End is still a slushy mess, so I had to ride up the middle of the street. On the greenway, 59th St. through the Intrepid is very wet. It is moderately wet until 14th St., then it is bone dry. The salt is a bigger problem than the slush, but I've got those crappy Armadillo tires that Christian makes fun of but that last forever.

Thanks for the full report, OK commuter!

Armadillos -- Other than the fact that they make your bike feel like you're hobbyhorsing a moped with a busted sparkplug wire, they're great. Be careful, though, they can give you leprosy.
