Let's face it, NYC is not a skiing town. Lots of boomers on ancient equipment shuffling along. I don't think I saw 5 people who were acutally skiing in Central Park in the hour and a half I was there. Yes, they were having fun in the snow but they had zero technique. And we can't attribute it to age. Once you have the stride it comes back. This is not a question of people being unfit. There was an epidemic of planting poles too far laterally from the track, resulting in that characteristic waddling of the hips. Classic cross country skiing is similar to pedaling a bike. You keep the momentum going as you stride. And then there is the issue of people walking in the ski tracks...

New York's a lonely town ...

...when you're the only ski bum around.

Hank, thanks for saying this. I was appalled, too. Lots of plodding around, but not one pretty kick-glide, kick-glide anywhere to be seen.
