Anybody know a good way to wash the straps of a bike helmet? I consider myself ultra low maintenance, but mine are a bit gamy. They never fully dry, either, as I have it on several times a day. Any tips would be appreciated.

I have used Dawn which I rub in with a tooth brush or your finger and hot water. It won't hurt the strapping and it cuts the grease (sweat).

Usually smells puuurty afterwards.

It really is a good idea to clean the straps so you kill the bacteria that clings to it.

Shower time

I simple take helmet into the shower every couple of weeks and use and anti-bac soap on the straps.

When I do not wash it, I always hand the helmet to dry after a ride.

Yeah, they get dirty - and the caked salt probably eats away at the fabric.

How do you wash?

But if you wear your helmet in the shower, how do you wash your hair? Wouldn't the oily hair eat away at the helmet??

I dunk mine in a tub of water with a little Woolite, soak for 5 minutes or so and rinse in a tub of clean water for another 5 minutes. Rinse well; you don't want soap residue to remain in the straps and irritate your skin. Will not smell purrty as previous poster's method but will more smell like a refreshing spring breeze in the countryside.

Manly men

Wow, who knew so many manly men care about smelling like a spring breeze and not irritating our sensitive skin!

Okay this is serious - how do you clean or maintain the cushion pads in the helmet? I just rinse them.
