"I saw the rumor on the velonews.com forum, confirmed at the ING site (search the results for ""Jalabert"") and at
www.artek.fr/jalabert/ (in French)
He ran 2:55:39 -- can all you runners put this in context for a first marathon?
I knew I should have watched for flags more closely!"
Laurent Jalabert ran the marathon
for non-pro runner, first time or not.
What's his age again? He definitely qualified for Boston in April. I wonder if he'll do it.
It's a huge accomplishment among runners to qualify for Boston, but I wonder if Jalabert has ambitions as a runner.
It would seem like it, judging from his time.
Maybe Jeff ran with Jaja for a while.
First Name Last Name Age Runner # Place Gender Place Age Place Pace Finish
Laurent Jalabert 36M FRA 29313 391 358 175 6:41 2:55:39
Sylvie Jalabert 35F FRA 4842 31743 9706 3812 12:52 5:38:27
391st out of 36,894 finishers is basically top 1% overall.
I watched the marathon on TV this morning b4 work (taped from yesterday): one of the stats they mentioned in the broadcast was that on average, it takes a person 4 hrs 44 mins to finish this race. I am assuming it's a true average (mean), taking into account sub 5 min/mile elites and those doing a 20 min/mile. A median time this year was actually 4 hrs 35 mins (in any case, these 2 figures are close enough).
To qualify for Boston (holy grail of recreational marathoners), a 36 yo man would need to finish within 3:15:59. Open qualifying time for men (under 35) is 3:10:59, and 3:40:59 for women.

Retired cycling stars Laurent Jalabert and Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel demonstrated their ability in a different sporting arena last weekend, participating in the famed ING New York City Marathon. In his first-ever attempt at a marathon, the now 36 year-old Jalabert completed the 26.2 mile (42.16 km) course in an excellent time of 2 hours, 55 minutes and 39 seconds - good enough for 391st place among a field of 36,894 runners!
35 year-old Dutchwoman Zijlaard-van Moorsel, who retired only recently after winning gold in the women's individual road time trial at the Athens Olympics, finished the same course in 3 hours 49 minutes and 4 seconds, earning a place in the top 20 percent and among the top 1000 female competitors.
