My favorite ride is just over the bridge to the peaceful 8 mile long river road in the palisade park that starts just south of the GWB and although the lower half has a very poor grade road the northern half has recently been resurfaced. When it closes during winter I have gone around the barriers and chanced an occasional rock slide because it is so beautiful. Unfotunately I have not figured out a good way to get there without risking my life and going either the wrong way south of the bridge or up and around a convoluted traffic pattern and trying to get across constant traffic going north. If anyone knows a good way to get there and what are the consequences if one is stopped for riding when the road is closed I would be interested to find out.

That is the way, unless you take a ferry to Port Imperial and ride north. As for riding there when the gates are closed, there is no problem. It is especially nice on cold winter nights (hint Neile).

"""northern half has recently been resurfaced"". Really? I was just there. There is a section, going north at the south end that was resurfaced some time ago. The north end and the beginning, at the south, is dreadful."
