"Tough D.A. (in Houston area)
"
Some call it murder
"Just remember where this happened. It wasn't California (a bicycle-friendly state). Or Massachusetts (another bicycle friendly state) or Oregon or Washington (ditto).
The death of a little girl for any reason is a disaster and a horrible thing. But remember, the murder charges resulting from the death happened in Texas, where a shortage of inmates on death row causes civil service unemployment, hurts the economy, and provides grounds for unseating people in elections. An assistant DA ain't worth cow plop until he makes his bones on a murder case. So if you don't have a gen-u-wine murder, invent one.
Just a hunch, but does anyone know the race of the driver and the race of the little girl? I have a deep suspicion they might be different.
By the way, ever hear of nifty day ride that starts in central Houston? I don't think so. This is Interstate country, buddy, and the land of 8-lane streets, and if God had meant bicycles to ride on the roads built with taxpayer money, He would have given them engines.
Speaking of which, I sent a long account of my Texas arrest and imprisonment on charges of bicycle riding to our esteemed bulletin editor many, many months ago. He wrote back a suspiciously-respectful note saying he'd publish it. (It came with pictures and everythang.) Nothing ever ran.
