Sorry for such a novice question but I am heading out for a ride in the a.m. and just want to make sure all is safe before I go and missed any chance of an open bike shop....

When I am pedaling there is a squeking sound...could this be something serious or does something just need to be oiled or something?

Thanks

From where?

You have to figure out where the squeak is coming from. Then you should be able to fix it. You could cover your bases by lubing the chain and pedals and making sure the chain isn't rubbing the front deraileur as it goes around.

squeak

"Hi Carol,
Thanks for your reply... so I went over to my bike and lifted up the back end and pedaled to determine where the noise is coming from and it doesn't squeak which means it only squeaks when I am on it ... so perhaps it is the pedal itself .. I have never ""lubed"" the pedals... how would I do this? I have the oil I use on my chain, I can just use that right?"

squeak

Also check that its not just the cleat surface and the pedal surface squeaking together (LOOK cleats love to squeak). Your chain lube could work fine in your pedal's moving parts as well

squeek

I finally found and solved a troublesome squeek. I took off the seat and seat tube, clean the seat tube with solvent, lightly greased it, reinserted it and tightened the seat bolt securely. Magic, the squeek totally went away.

Prior to finding the source of the squeek, I replaced the look pedals, chain, and bottom bracket. Not one of those caused the squeek. In addition, I cleaned and totally inspected the frame for cracks. Luckily, there were no cracks.
