Just want to drop a note to thank Mordechai Silver for a wonderful ride today (Sat. July 31) through one of the nicest routes we've seen yet in the Hudson valley. Pace was right on 19 overall, route was spectacular, and we really appreciated that great summer weather you worked out too.

Seriously, it was great. Thanks for the work you put into planning and leading the ride.

Ride Stats

Here are some stats from Sunday's ride. I use a Ciclo Sport 434 odometer/altimeter, so if you want to dispute them, talk to Ciclo Sport.

Mileage (Boathouse to Cold Spring): 100.22
Elevation Gain: 5,373ft
Average Grade: 6%
Maximum Grade: 16% (no doubt on Little Tor)
Maximum Grade on Descent: 13%

Thank you Mordechai. Refreshing to see a tough long ride done at a true A19 pace. And what a perfect way to end it--outdoor dinner (and beer...and ice cream) in Cold Spring.

avg grade

I am not sure what average grade is being measured. Maybe it was for a particular hill you did. For the whole ride it was 1% (5374 feet or 1 mile divided by 100 miles.)

Measuring avarage grade of all climbs, not the entire ride.

Ditto

The best ride I've been on this season.

from me too

It was great! Spectacular views, lovely roads, great work out--thanks for putting it all together.

Colleen

P.S. I came in at 98.5. Close enough! There was a huge festival going on at Grant's tomb, so my laps around the block didn't happen.

another thank you

Mordecai-

I am 100% in agreement with everything that's been said already about this ride. The route was fantastic, with all those fun climbs and kind of scary descents :) And the beer in Cold Spring was the perfect way to end it :)

Thanks again!!!

Also thanks to Sal for posting the stats--now I can be officially proud of myself for surviving a 13% grade descent :)

P.S. Is there any way you can post an electronic version of the cue sheet here (or email it to me)?

man of steel

here is another round of applause for Mordecai - does he always ride in sneakers? i can only imagine how fast he would ride with stiff soled shoes, he'd have amazing energy transfer! thanks for a great ride and be persistent in finishing it.
great roads, views and directions!

Mordecai wears Puma Ventouxs. They're cycling shoes.

Yesterday's ride

"Thanks to all of you for coming out and making it a great ride. And I appreciate your kind words. I certainly had good luck -- from the weather, which was beautiful (even if it seemed 100° on some of the unshaded climbs), to the kindness of the conductor, who opened another car for us, allowing us to enjoy our trip home with plenty of room for our bikes.

I usually eat in Cold Spring at some place on Main St., but David suggested the outdoor café down by the railroad. This was the first time I had been there, and the food, the beer, and the atmosphere were very good. Thanks, David, for introducing me to this place.

The section of Rte. 106 between Lake Welch and Kanawaukee Circle was covered with loose gravel, as Steve Weiss mentioned in another thread, and I was very relieved that everyone managed to get through safely. I was using wider tires than anyone else, I think, and I was still pretty nervous on that stretch.

Christian is correct: I was wearing Puma Ventoux cycling sneakers yesterday. (Unfortunately, these are no longer made, but I have an extra pair, and I did buy a pair each of Carnac Forclaz and Carnac Carlit shoes from Bill Laine, so you can see that I am persisting in my unregenerate ways.) I don't think there's much difference in my speed whether I'm riding in my Pumas with toe clips or in my Sidis with Look pedals. But thanks for the compliment, Regina: ""man of steel"" is true in a way, because I've tried other frame materials (well, at least aluminum), but steel is what I like best."

Mordecai, if you wear a 43, I have another pair of Ventouxs for you. Too narrow for me. Worn for about 30 miles. You pick up on UWS or meet downtown. Free.
