Does anyone know of any good century rides in August or early September?
Centuries in August
A beautiful Vermont ride! Did it last Summer.
Yes, this is a gorgeous one...through rolling river valleys, great rest stops (the first, in Montpelier, has restrooms in the state capital building; marble lined, and the ladies room is right across the hall from the Lt. Gov's office!)
I led a 5BBC w/e group trip to VT to do this century last year and to free ride on the other 2 days. Am doing same this year.
We have a great (and bon marche!) package rate with lodging and chef-cooked breakfasts from a local ski club. And all of VT is our oyster.
Email me if you'd like details of this year's trip up there which I'm again leading (via car pooling), or check out http://www.5bbc.org/weekend.shtml
Best to all,
Susan Rodetis
PS. THere are still more dairy cows than cell phones in VT

I don't know if it's well organized or not, but I've been to that area and can definitely say that it's stunningly beautiful... I was there last fall to run a relay race, and it's the hilliest area I've ever run in (even counting Colorado)--but that obviously depends on the route they come up with... I just think hills would be unavoidable up there.
They also have a hill climb the day before (~7-8 mi, 12% average grade--but it goes up to 22% at the very end--that's just sick!!!) It's already sold out for '05, but could be something to consider in the future. Hmm... sounds like a perfect weekend for '06--climb a 12% grade hill one day and then ride a century the next day :)

August 6. Very flat but a lot of scenic farmland and little traffic. Very well organized.
speaking of centuries, I'd be up for going to bear mtn. one of the upcoming weekends. Not the most scenic century but very convenient. I would be looking to do A19 - getting out there quickly and depending on how we feel, take a more scenic or hilly route on the way back. It will be my first century of the season so I am not looking for a hammerfest..
In fact, how about this Sunday? I am still trying to figure out what I can do that day training-wise, and a century would be just perfect!!! Email me if that works for you.
If not, maybe we can arrange smth for one of the upcoming Sundays (Saturdays don't work for me at all, unfortunately).
By the way, there's an organized century ride in Southern CT this Sunday (http://sccc.recol.net/century.htm), but it seems like there's no way to get there using public transportation (at least based on my research... amtrak goes there but is rather pricey, and I am not sure if they even allow bikes on board)
If your Sunday century to Bear Mt. is on, would you mind posting to this thread or shooting me a quick note? I am looking for a lower A ride - there seem to be none on Sunday. Bear Mt. would be perfect! I could join on either side of GWB. Thanks.

Vitaly-
If you are willing to go, I am DEFINITELY in (I just didn't want to go all by myself, since I am not much of a bike mechanic (if anything happens)--to put it mildly... and also somewhat prone to getting lost). Maybe we'll even get a few more people to join in (should we make it a separate thread maybe?)
Either side of GWB works for me. What time? (the earlier the better... no time is too early!!!)
You can email me directly to discuss details.
Thanks!
Sure. Just one thing, though: I don't know the way. Do you? A separate thread is probably a good idea to let others join in, especially if we need a leader. I am going to invite a couple of friends (NYCC riders) - perhaps they know the route.

Inga and Vitaly - sounds great! thanks for joining in. I know the way up 9W through Havestraw - but need to confirm the turn up into Seven Lakes Drive. Let's stress that we do want to try to keep it moving - i mean, limited breaks. We can get liquids and a small snack up in Nyack since there aren't many options after that for a while if you need to refuel. Bring snacks and gu's. and be prepared for this awful humid weather!
