I recently started road biking (I've been an avid mountain biker for countless number of years) and been lurking on some road cycling sites when I happened to stumble upon this site.

I live in the Murray Hill area and have been riding around Central Park as well as on the Greenway. I like the idea of riding in groups at times because of the camaraderie as well as pick-up some insightful tips.

Anyway, are there any newcomer rides scheduled in the near future? I would like to kick the proverbial tires (so to speak) and get to know some of the people here before I join NYCC. Thanks!

Don't wait

Luke, you don't have to wait for a Newcomers Ride. You can join any NYCC ride without being a member. The important thing is to do the self-classification ride, described in the Rides section of this website, so you know what level ride to start with. My advice is to start with a ride that's a little below the level you think you're at - that way you can sit back and get to know folks without having to struggle to keep up. Welcome to road biking.

Thanks, Carol! I'll keep my eye out on a C level ride. I think I'll be able able to hang with the B level riders but I'll take your advice. :)

Look for a C-14/15 or a B-15 in the 40 mile range. Sounds like you're fit enough to do that. If you choose a longer ride, make it one that goes up into Westchester - that way you have MetroNorth bailouts if you can't sustain it. If you do a Bergen/Rockland ride, there are no bailouts.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick reply and boost of confidence.

Coincidentally, I lived in Westchester for many years. I mountain biked all over Westchester including Blue Mountain, Graham Hills, and Sprain Ridge. I've seen roadies in Armonk, White Plains, Larchmont/New Rochelle but never gave it a second thought.

Now that I live in Manhattan, I decided to challenge the perils of traffic and pick-up road riding. Go figure.

I also picked-up a Metro-North bicycle permit. Hopefully, I won't have to use it becuase of a bail-out but I look forward to joing a ride.
