I've read that there's a path that goes from the Hoboken river front bike path to Liberty State Park. Is this true? Where does the path pick up south of Hoboken?

Thanks

I think this is what you're referring to: a foot bridge that crosses the canal (charming in August) at the southern end of Hoboken - it's at the end of Jersey Av, across the vacant lot, onto the rickety wooden planks, thru the overgrown weeds and out onto Audrey Zapp Dr, turn left into LSP.

Times have changed

Evan, sounds like you haven't been there in a while.

Alot has changed in that area for the better, including the entrance at the end of Jersey Avenue, located in Jersey City (not Hoboken). You'd be quite surprised. I wont go into detail here, you will just have to check it out for yourself.

The PATH in Hoboken is at the tail end of Hoboken, which is next door to Jersey City. There's some bike/ped paths along the waterfront in Jersey City, but it's quite disjointed at the moment. That will change as there's alot of new development along the waterfront and federal $ has been desginated for such paths along Hudson stretching as far as from Bayonne to Fort Lee, or thereabouts and every where in between (including Hoboken and Jersey City).

Thanks.

I guess what I'm most unclear of is the first steps out of Hoboken. On the following map it looks like there's waterfront paths once you get past the tunnel:

first steps

The first steps out of the Hoboken PATH is to make a 1st, quick left off the cobble street road (Hudson Pl/River St), then a 1st, quick right onto Observer Highway. Note the name highway is a misnomer. It's a local speed limit, 4 lane wide road.

While on Observer, you make a 1st left, which is about a mile up the road. Afterwards, you then make another 1st left and that should put you onto the map with the link you provided, Washington St. From there, continue on Washington St, passing by an A&P supermarket, the backside of a Target store. On the left side, when you first approach the tall residential and office building, you'll be able to pick up a bike path there, Newport section.

Note: the map's directions combine mostly low traffic roadways and bike/ped paths. Like I mentioned before, the paths are a bit disjointed.

If you are concerned about taking some young ones along, most, if not all of the roads on the map have sidewalks which incidentally with nary any people traffic (unlike NYC). There's also a light rail system (think above ground subway/modern day trolley), which covers most of that map's course including stops neaby the Hoboken PATH and Liberty State park entrance.
