"One of our stalwarts, Neile Weissman, has mapped out an excellent route for this Wednesday's ride:

Boathouse to Van Sinderen & Linden Streets (11+ miles). These are particularly ""technical"" urban roads. Time and weather permitting, we may explore the shores of Jamaica Bay.

On the way back, we will cut across Brooklyn's heart for a bite to eat at El Huipel in Red Hook.

Planned for next week is an epic ride to City Island for a seafood dinner; return is via Subway.

Speechless...

Tahawus and this in one week! History buff will note that we were in the area of the old Jamaica Pass, used by General Howe to outflank Washington's army during the Battle of Long Island, an event reenacted every evening from 5:00-7:00PM...

I still need to determine where those tunnels go.

"updated for ""past day"" search"

"""On the way back, we will cut across Brooklyn's heart for a bite to eat in Red Hook.""

We'll likely be too late getting to Red Hook but there's some other tasty options near the Williamsburg Bridge.

The Rail Line

"I have not yet found any information regarding the abandoned railroad right-of-way, but I thought the following interesting, regarding the long adandoned LIRR Northport Spur.

The following pictures and commentary of the current status of the Northport Spur (1/2 mile from where I grew up) were also contributed by Mark Kolodny:

""View across Laurel Hill looking S/SE down ROW in the direction of LIRR Pt. Jeff main. ROW has been disrupted in spots with berms, logs and ditches to discourage local incorrigibles from riding dirt bikes on it. I'm not sure how much of a success this has been.""

""Discourage local incorrigibles from riding dirt bikes"" -- that's me!"
