"""She's just the most wonderful, caring individual I've ever met,"" her husband's stunned uncle said last night outside her Berkeley Place apartment.

The uncle, who declined to give his name, said Padilla was a graduate of Cornell Law School and worked as an attorney for a nonprofit group.

She ran in marathons and rode her bike often, he said.

""She was a guide for a blind man in a bike race,"" he said. ""That says it all. That's the type of person she was.""

------------------

I don't know the area well, but one friend writes: ""Trucks that door are a regular feature of 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, including double-parked-in-the-bike-lane trucks that door.""

Question: was the driver who opened his door into her path parked in a bike lane? Did he open his door without looking? Will he at least be cited for dooring?

Another friend who saw the scene 30 minutes later said he was still shaking after three hours.

Survival tip: NEVER swerve into traffic. If you hit that pedestrian or exiting driver, they'll remember not to do it again. OR take the whole damn lane and let 'em honk all they want.

Another promising life extinguished."

5th Avenue is dangerous

I ride this way all the time to get to the park and I have NUMEROUS close calls... every time I ride there. I'm so sad to hear that this happened. Cars are always, always in the bike lane where there is one and rarely does anyone look back before pulling out of a parking space or opening a door. I will probably start taking a different route, but not until I pay my respects tomorrow.

Something truly needs to be done about the blatant disregard that drivers have for cyclists. Too many people are dying.

speak for yourself

No, what I am saying is that this post was by a known troll who has no interest whatsoever in the fate of the cyclist or the feelings of her family.

Carol, Eileen please remove your posts

I agree, Eileen that we should respect this thread by not having these conversations on it. Therefore, I think we should all remove our messages. Click on the edit button next to your thread and remove the text so anyone who hasn't seen them will not get the pleasure and so that no one else will respond making this about the wrong thing. You will have to put at least one letter in the body to get it to save the new message.

What's a Troll?

what's a troll and what is all this about? I respect your wishes to keep your conversation private, but can someone explain what started this sudden secrecy?

I'm shocked and sorry to hear about Elizabeth Padilla. My deepest sympathy goes out to her friends and family.

def

"Here's a definition I found by Googling. I sent it to Stan a year and a half ago, in the midst of the flame wars. But the club never added this def to the rules list or any of my other suggestions. It is believed that ""problems will go away on their own."" But clearly, they don't, and won't, without some kind of intervention--either by board users or monitors.

---------------------------------

A troll is deliberately crafted to provoke others with the intention of wasting their time and energy.

A troll is a time thief. To troll is to steal from people. That is what makes trolling heinous.

Trolls can be identified by their disengagement from a conversation or argument. They do not believe what they say, but merely say it for effect.

Trolls are motivated by a desire for attention by people and can't or won't acquire it in a productive manner.

Someone may be insufferable, infuriating, fanatical, and an ignorant idiot to boot without being a troll.

Also note that a troll isn't necessarily insulting, snide, or even impolite. Only the crudest, most obvious, forms of trolling can be identified so easily.

If you find yourself patiently explaining, at length and in great detail, some obscure point to someone who isn't even being polite to you, then you are probably being trolled.

---------------------------------------

This thread is a perfect example of trolling. It was begun with a sincere intent to provide information of some importance to club members, but it has been completely taken over by trolls, anonymous and otherwise, thrown totally off the subject, and wasted everyone's time. That's it for me.

Buncha losers.

I know it was off the subject

but thanks for taking the time to explain trolling to an honestly curious person.

In fact, that explains a lot about the NYCC message board! I mourn the loss of my innocence but will bravely face this harsh new reality.
