Hear me, NYCC Campagnolo experts:

I have a pre-2001 Campagnolo 9-speed cassette hub, and a post-2001 set of 9-speed Ergo levers. What kind of rear derailleur and cassette will I need for these to work together?

Thanks,
Adam

The pre-2001 derailleurs and brifters were different from post-2001 derailleurs and brifters, and must be matched, but the cassette spacing is unchanged. What changed was the shift disk in the brifter and the cable/cage ratio in the derailleur.

So, since you have post-2001 brifters, you'll need a post-2001 rear derailleur. Any Campy 9sp cassette should work. And fwiw, I've never seen cassettes marked as pre- or post-2001.

9 speed

I have mixed and matched Campy 8 and 9 with no ill effects at all. I have used 9 speed shifters with an 8 speed derailleur and everything worked fine. It shifts flawlessly. I have used 8 speed shifters with a 9 speed derailleur as well. No problems whatsoever. Both pre and post 2001. Ten speed though must be matched with a 10 rear derailleur. Front does not matter.

Campy compatibiity

Adam-
You can convert any Campy Ergo shifter to 8sp, pre/post 2001 9sp or 10sp by changing the index cam, cost about $31.00 or so. visit www.Branfordbikes.com. They are trove of Campy information.
All 9/10 speed hubs are compatible with any 9/10 sp cassette, though the newer hubs are easier to overhaul.
I'm the one who swapped a bunch of Chorus hubs and cassettes for your 10sp cassette last year.
Email me if you have any questions.
Regards,
Fred

8s and 9s

I remember it well, Fred. In fact, I trued up your 8-speed wheel on Saturday (I've been riding on it all spring) and rode to Montauk on it on Sunday. The assorted 9-speed stuff will probably wait until late in the year, but it's helpful to know what to keep an eye out for. No doubt I'll drop a line when the time comes...

Thanks,
Adam
