I was in Nyack today, and saw a Nyack town cop issuing tickets to two cyclists. The cyclists had been 'pulled over' on Piermont Avenue, about 4-5 blocks north of the Thruway underpass. They were waiting by their bikes while the cop sat in his squad car, apparently writing out tickets. The only things I could imagine them being stopped for was riding two abreast (which I thought was legal in New York State), or running a stop sign.

I also saw a cop who had stopped a cyclist on Hudson Terrace as I approached the bridge. The cop was out of the car lecturing the cyclist about something, and the cyclist was nodding his head. I didn't notice which jurisdiction this cop is employed by.

Only allowed if there are no overtaking vehicles.

a local newspaper columnist has criticized the police re: bikes

"1. Piermont has a ""single file law"" I think Grand View & perhaps other communities also have such laws.

2. A local newspaper columnist, in his most recent anti-cycling diatribe has called for a ""minuteman"" type action against bicyclists. (I think Pres.Bush called the Minutemen ""vigilantes"") He compared cyclists to illegal immigrants because we crossed (state & county) borders are broke the (single file) law. He also has strongly criticized the police for what he claims is their lax enforcement of these laws. It is possible that the police are responding to this criticism. See the Rockland Bicycle Club's web site for more info."
