Does anyone have a straight-pull or straight gauge replacement spoke - length 290 mm? This is for a broken spoke on my blue anodized Mavic Cosmos front wheel. Please contact me via email or the message board. Thanks.

(I tried a couple of bike shops and I'll just say that I am peeved about that experience and I am hoping against hope to get one here.)

Try Bike shop

There's a small bike shop on the West side of 9th Avenue, in the mid 50s that has a spoke cutting machine. They'll be able to cut-to-size a spoke for you. Sorry I don't recall their name, but I have purchased spokes from them for like a buck a pop.

If not them, then try another shop that caters to bike messengers. It's likely such shops will have on hand the $$$ spoke cutter tool.

I think your best bet is to sit down and call around to see who has a Phil Wood spoke cutting and threading machine.

If they do, they can take a standard 310mm spoke, cut the end, and roll the threads on. The downside is, the machine is $3000+, so not many shops are likely to have one. Try Bike Works on the LES, and maybe that guy on Long Island who builds custom wheels.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

[EDIT: Umm, never mind, Peter already said it...]

Straight pull/straight gauge

It's no problem to get a regular spoke cut to size - I think most bike shops can do that. The key here apparently is the straight gauge, which perhaps Bike Works may have.

Christian, is that what you mean by the Phil Wood machine? How is that different than a regular spoke cutter, if at all? Thanks.

Ok, maybe I'm not entirely clear on how the Cosmos spoke looks - is it threaded with a nipple on either end or does it have a regular hat at the hub end, just without an elbow?

If it's the former, get a longer spoke, snip the hat and elbow with the cutter, and roll some threads on it. Then it'll have threads at both ends. Attach nipples at both ends and adjust. Ta-Da. (I think this is how Cosmos work...)

Ah, bugger, I just found a picture. That won't work; it's not like that. It's like a regular spoke but without an elbow. You might, _might_ be able to use a regular spoke that is 2mm longer, but the cutout on the hub might make that tough.

A better idea - How about doing what I suggested, but cutting the spoke 4-6mm longer and threading on a nipple backwards on the hub end. That'd do you, if you're desparate. But yeah, these are pretty much keep-you-on-the-road solutions suitable for riding to the next bike shop on a tour.

You need a new spoke. Suck.

Sorry I'm useless,

Mavic website may help a web-savvy shop

direct pull spokes online

Go to this site http://icyclesusa.com and find the spokes area. Then see their direct pull spokes. To determine the proper length use a spoke calculator site. Here's one: http://www.houseof3d.com/pete/applets/wheel/appwheel.html

I have Mavic hubs and intend on rebuilding the wheel with a new but different rim (thus new spokes are required) but just have not gotten around to it.

Bike Works has it

Christian - You are definitely not useless. You always have good things to say and are at least very entertaining. Plus I can see from Bike Works website that they have the straight spokes I need. (Of course they are closed Wednesday though.)

I checked out the Icycles site for the first time and it looks good.

gauging bike & words spoke

"I'm glad that you found Bike Works as a source of elbowless spokes. I recommend that you purchase a few replacement spokes of each length: front, rear drive & non-drive side. They're cheap (as long as they're not Kysriums ;-) so it's hard to beat such just-in-case convenience.

Just for future reference, ""straight gauge"" refers to spokes that have the same diameter/width throughout the length of the spoke. This is in contrast to ""butted"" spokes which tend to be thinner in the middle portion of the spoke."

Replacement spokes

"Pedal On in England sells replacement spokes, but unfortunately they don't ship to the U.S.

You can try calling Mavic:

Mavic Inc.

or (888) GO-MAVIC

Spoken words, broken spokes

Peter - Thanks for clearing that up. I need straight pull, or elbowless, spokes - not straight gauge spokes.

Moredechai - I called Mavic, thanks for the number. I left a message and now I await their return call. Lots of luck, right?

I am not sure if Bike Works has the straight pull, after all. I will find out tomorrow.

When I was looking for replacement spokes for my Mavic Kysrium Elite wheels as few years ago, Bicycle Renaissance on the upper west side was the only shop that would order them and sell me a couple. Try them out.

Sid's and a few other shops wanted me to buy the whole case of spokes - far more than I needed.
