Does anyone know a parking garage or other safe place that will allow you to leave your bike during the workday? I heard the Millenium Hotel parking garage will for a fee, but am looking for others in the 42&2 UN area. Looking to ride to work, but my building won't let me bring my bike inside. Thanks.

I know people who commute with folding bikes or they have found garages with bike parking. I've seen garages with bike parking, and they are rarely convenient and they are usually jammed. Folding bikes may be easy to fold up, but you still have to have a place to put them once you're inside, and the very act of folding it up and stashing it in the bag seems a pain in the tush.

Investigate your building's loading bay. Maybe you could talk the landlord into providing a bike rack there. That way, the bike is inside, protected from the elements, and it's not out in plain sight for thieves.

hmmm

Given the new Seven, Blur and fixie in the past 12 months, I think the folding is out of the question due to budgetary constraints. Interestingly, that is the one thing you CAN get into the building.

I may try the loading dock, that's a good idea - thanks.

Folding Bikes

If your building allows you to bring your folded bike inside you can park it under your desk. That's what I do. Some buildings may not allow you to bring it through the main lobby, but you might get friendly with the loading dock guys.

TA has a list of bicycle friendly parking grages.

And a feeble list it is. Five locations in all of Manhattan.

A garage at the U.N. Plaza Hotel is listed, so Ted should investigate the parking situation there, and report back. He should also let T.A. know the state of bike parking there, since there are question marks about the safeness of the garage.
