I lock up my beater bike around the city with a Krypto quad chain and huge American lock. Because it's such a heavy lock, I rarely take it with me when I'm riding my nice bike to get in shape.

I read in this month's bulletin that SIG riders should take a lock. I'm confused. Surely nobody on these rides wraps a krypto chain around their waist. I also wouldn't feel comfortable with my nice road bike being locked up with a U-lock. what's the deal?

If anything, bring a super-small luggage or ski lock (5mm cable, about 120cm long).

I've always counted on someone stealing a nice Serotta or Seven before they look at my junker. It's worked so far.

"I bought one of these on eBay for about $5 shipped:

It's about 5mm x 36"" - good for lunch stops, etc.

I haven't seen it in the flesh--it's probably not more than a thin cable. But again, the principle is simple deterrence. Looks interesting to me.
