This week's UAR ride will feature the Gates by night. There will be a full moon and the snow should add an interesting perspective. Bring your studded snow tires. Next week we will attempt some spelunking.
Wednesday Evening UAR Ride
Excuse my ignorance but I have been out of town since last week. Is there really that much snow in the park that snow tires are necessary? I have only my fixed gear on 23c wheels.
I have been looking forward to tomorrow's ride. It is my one chance to see the Gates before they close--unless Saturday's STS ride is frozen out.
I got a (used) Rocky Mountain bike in December and have been pining to do the Urban Adventure ride ever since. But fate has not been kind to my quest as it's been a tough couple of months of inclement weather and illness. But tomorrow we ride!
I am not going to change to my studded snow tires, but something with knobbies will be a must.
...most likely.
A noncycling friend tells me that the paths are clear of snow. So if you guys go gonzo, I'll go my own way.
Yesterday evening's UAR was our most successful to date, with 9 intrepid riders braving cold, damp conditions for an unorthodox and fun viewing of the Gates. One longtime New York resident confessed vistas previously unseen to him; my favorite part was along the Harlem Meer. The police presentence (that we were trying to avoid), snow, extra lighting and full moon made for a surreal atmosphere.
It was indeed a great (if brief) ride. Our route was very adventurous and took me places in Central Park where I have never been, and may never be again. So thanks again!
