After looking at the gear Inch charts, I am convinced that a compact crank would be a great upgrade for my riding. Swithcing from a 53/39 12-25 to a 50/34 11-23 would give me a higher high and a lower low while reducing the size of the jumps between gears.

The only compact front derailer I have found is a campy. I currently have a Shimano Group. Has anyone used a non-compact Shimano front derailer with a compact crank? Or have you used the campy front derailer with a STI lever. Or did you switch to Campy?

Trying to not empty my wallet making the change.

No problem

"I run 34/48 compact cranks with plain old Ultegra and Dura-Ace double front derailleurs. They shift just fine. I've also used somewhat antique SunTour Cyclone units as well. It seems to me that having a special ""compact"" front der is a little bit of marketing at work."

totally agree

Marketing BS.

Got DA front derailers working 34-46 on on bike, 33-48 on another. No problems.
