My 8-year old son is becoming an avid cyclist. So far we've been riding on the West Side paths. The longest rides we've done have been 10-12 miles round trip. I have two questions:

1. He's asking me if we can take a long ride and then go camping afterwards. I don't have a car, so I'm wondering if we can take a train someplace to do this. I'd appreciate any pointers to on the best way to find out what my options are.

2. Are there any bike club activities that might be suitable for someone his age? He's a pretty good rider, but I don't want him riding in the street, although we have done that bad stretch between 125th and 135th. Also some very steep hills, e.g., the steep one in the park, will be too much for him.

Thanks for your advice.

Wildwood State Park on L.I.

Wildwood State Park on L.I. has a camping area. You can get passes that allow you to bring your bikes on many LIRR trains. The closest station is probably Calverton, a mostly flat 5-10 miles away.
There are probably many other campgrounds near MetroNorth stations but I doubt you'll find one where the nearby roads are as flat as eastern Long Island.
