I noticed the North Transverse was closed today and is being dug up. Could they finally be repaving?

Me too, last night. I understand that they are widening the entrance way on the west side. One won't have to slow down as much when entering in order to do hill repeats.

"i noticed last week, before they started the work, that a message ""bike riding not permitted on park pathways"" (or similar) had been stenciled on the entrance to the transverse on the west side. these are all over the place now including at the rambles shed & boathouse walkways (but not driveways). but i did not see a corresponding warning at the east side entrance to the transverse. it would be a real shame if the transverse were posted off-limits to cyclists especially if it is being widened ...

how can one find out what the work consists of, schedule, etc? i tried the nyc parks dept site, the cp conservancy site, the dot site, nyc.gov, no info.

where else in town do folks do hill repeats?"

More needed repair - 87th West Drive bump

"Geo K. -
Thank you for posting and leaving name and email address of Ed Benson/Central Park Conservancy. Don't know if he's the proper contact but I have just written him regarding the large bump in the roadway on the downhill around 87th West Drive...the one painted with an ""X"". The one I have personally observed at least 6 accidents requiring an ambulance over the last six months that has not been repaired, just marked. The one, we all know all to well, and have been waiting and waiting for them to fix.

If I get any response from Mr. Benson, I will follow up and post here.

thanks for ed's contact info. he replied to my email inquiring about the transverse that the work is being done to widen the entrance, and if the weather cooperates, could be completed by this evening. he also said that he was not familiar with the no bikes notice but would look into it, and that bikes are allowed on the transverse.

More Repairs: CP West Drive 87th St bump

Ditto...
Thanks for Ed Benson's contact info. He replied to my email complaint about accidents on the 87St bump in CP and says plans are underway to repair the roadway there. See a post I left in another thread.

Where else do people do hill repeats? Elsewhere if they really want to get a good workout.

There are a few good spots, mostly in upper Manhattan. There is the hill that goes from 125th Street to Riverside Drive, near Grant's Tomb. (However, one must be cautious when going back down the hill, as the bottom half is one way for uphill-bound traffic, not to mention the crappy pavement near the bottom.)

There is also a hill on or near West 155th Street that is reportedly nice for hill repeats. And of course, you could always go to Inwood for some very big pitches.

This afternoon...

...the old curb was gone, the new curb was in place and they were pouring concrete into the new roadbed. With any luck, they'll be finished by Thanksgiving.

FollowUp: Repair of bump @ 87th and West Drive

"Hi Folks,

I am posting a message I got in response to an email complaint I made to the Central Park Conservancy about the dangerous bump at West Drive downhill around 87St (that has not been repaired for months and months, and I've seen a number of people hit and end up in an ambo). A number of you have mentioned this problem before in other threads.

So far the only ""repair"" has been to paint it red. Some of you got me a bit motivated to write. It did something. Maybe this Political Action stuff can have an effect after all? My thanks to George Kaplan for having posted Ed Benson's contact info so we know who to write in future.

Of course, now lets wait and see how long it actually takes, but its a start!

-Jed

any further word on this?

Someone fell on this bump during a ride (non-NYCC) I led Friday night. It's not that bad a bump, in my opinion, but the paint job makes the surface hard to make out and induces panic.

I just reported it (again) to 311.

Work being done Thursday, 10/07 at 9:45 p.m.

As I rode by tonight at 9:45 p.m., cones had been put up and there was a work truck at the spot. Looks like the worker was using a jack-hammer to repair said bump.
