I love riding my Trek 5200, but also need to get my mountain bike fix. I've only ridden a dozen or so times, but totally dig it and want to do it more consistently. I live on the Upper West Side, have a car and would be happy to go during the week (Ringwood is an hour away) or on the weekends.

Not right now but..........

if you're looking for someone when the weather gets too cold for comfortable road biking (say from 01 November on), give me a call/e-mail anytime. (I just finished an Ironman and will be away for most of August anyway).
I also live on the UWS and ride a Trek 5200!
A few years ago, I did quite a bit of MTB over the winter months - mostly in Hartshorne/Huber - also about an hour from NYC. Much more interesting than Ringwood (where I went once) in my opinion.

Hey, Basil!! Thanks for your note. I will definitely get in touch when it starts to get chilly. I just rode Hartshorne a few weekends ago and had a blast! Ringwood is definitely rockier, but I still like the challenge it offers. Enjoy the rest of your summer! ~M.

Highly recommend Rocky Point out on Long Island. Near exit 66 off the L.I.E.

About 22 miles of really narrow twisting singletrack that's dedicated to biking (except in the winter when they allow hunting).

Its really safe, fairly flat, not much rocks or anything you're likely to break your neck on. The challenging sections are marked like ski trails so you always know they're coming and can avoid them (but don't - they're really fun!).

I think it's a great place to ride by yourself if you can't find a ride buddy.

Thanks for the tip! It sounds great! I'll put it on my list of places to check out. ~M.

I do too :)

Maria,
Thanks for posting. I too ride a Trek 5200...how crazy. But anyways, my poor GT Zaskar is feeling sad and gathering dust. I'm always up for a mountain bike ride. If you go I'd be more than happy to pay for gas and we'll have a great time. Maybe we can organize something with a bunch of people. Drop me a line.

Ciao,
Mark

Maria, there is a fairly dedicated group that occasionally go off road. Last Sunday we were at Blue Mountain in Peekskill. We were also at Ringwood the Sunday of the NYC Triathlon. I'm available during the week. Let's ride. Please email me.

In the Fall for sure

I love to ride my Trek 5500 as well and can't wait till the cooler weather to ride the trails (well, actually I can wait). Stillwell Park in Long Island (near exit 44) and Hartshorne Park in Red Bank NJ are two of the best trails around. Stillwell is within 45 minutes from the Upper West Side and Hartshore is maybe 1 hour and 15 minutes away. Ringwood is a little too rocky for my taste.

Is any of this stuff 'cross bike friendly or is it MTB only?

Stillwell is easily cross ridden.

Hartshorne/Huber are probably more suited to MTB but much of it could be done on a cross-bike if you like dismounting for logs etc! It's largely single-track and some of the trails (generally aptly named) have a number of obstacles.
