Climbing Crow

Blending in with the media mosh today at her significant other Lance Armstrong's pre-Tour de France press conference, rock star Sheryl Crow confirmed to Cyclingnews that her current passion for cycling is paying off with performance.

""Yes, it's true"", Crow told us when we asked her to confirm the rumour that her time up l'Alpe d'Huez was 90 minutes from Bourg d'Oisans to the summit aboard her Trek Madone.

""It wasn't easy,"" she joked good naturedly."

Crow?

I for one, me personally myself, not representing the NYCC or it's former leaders, don't give an eyelash about who Lance ... well ... whom he dances with, ya' know! Now WHAT BICYCLE and how he rides, OK. But not whom! In fact, off the bike ... he's less than ... ah, he's is a great cyclist!

Go Jan!!!

It's not about Lance or his bike

JP, it's about Sheryl's accomplishment.

I think it's pretty impressive that a rock star-turned novice cyclist would do a climb like that. If cavorting with a world-cycling-champion-with-no-personality got her that far, I'd say it was well worth it.

Ninety minutes up Alpe d'Huez ain't bad. Though I did the comparable Whiteface in 1 hour 24 minutes.

Who cares!

Due respects, but so what! She's a pro cyclist's squeeze. This is just part of silly, banal star/hero-worship. Is she the only amateur to do this? No! It means nothing and is just part of Lance's media inundation. You know she crèmes Lance’s shammy. Wow, you’ve come a long way baby (insert sarcastic emoticon).

We are not talking music here, but cycling. Do you care what coffee lance drinks, his favorite color of MMs, or whom he … well … ya’ know! I don't.

Prey to media. Marketing!! I’m not being jaded, just sick of all the hype.

Go Jan!!

NO! But I like ...

... my detractor to be an anonymous, sarcastic scaredy-cat with no humor or style. Thanks for the joke, Robert.

I am just displeased with all the hype. Ms. Crow would never be mentioned as riding AdH but for Lance.

I'm glad you care about the hype - whoever you are, wherever you hide. Best to remain anonymous. Meow<

for whom it may concern
robert meyer

well I thought it was funny
but its OK if you didn't

in any event
yes its overhyped
but is that a surprise
it has no real purpose
it appeals to the baser instincts
but whats wrong with a little frivolous fun
as long as you keep it in perspective
lighten up
enjoy the show

Thanks

Thanks for coming up to the plate (pardon my mixed-sports metaphor).

I like Ms. Crow and some of her tunes. WTF it/she has to do with cycling, I dunno. How many thousands of amateurs/recreationalists have climbed AdH with no fan fare. But she is uniballer's sqeeze ... so ... HYPE. (Trying my best to appear bitter).

If I see you on the road - g'ade on me. In the bar - beer on me! I keep the green MMs!!

Go Strudel-Man ... uh, ... Jan! (And that's my real eason for objecting to the hype) ;-p

Counting Crow

JP,

You say that you don't give an eyelash about this but you posted 4 times. How many times would you have posted if you actually cared?

FIVE??

Five and counting. Sorry that an ongoing dialogue bothers you. But, glad YOU care about me. Stay tuned!

And Go Jan!

Are we going to have to separate you all?

"If everyone turns up at the viewing parties we'll have to have separate tables for the different factions. Can't we all get along.

Tyler is a great guy... he's got grit and deserves whatever he can get. Jan is a superb athlete well deserving of a win in this comeback, Ecstasy free year. But Lance ain't the evil empire despite the media frenzy... He's got a lot of endorsements but not as many as Tiger Woods (who hasn't won lately) or Shaq or any number of other athletes. And this ""Lance Effect"", to quote the New York Times, is very pleasing to those of us who love cycling

I will be at the Lance table... so he has no personality, he's a great biker... and his story is somewhat compelling, so he's a tiny bit arrogant, after getting fired for having cancer, facing death and surviving and then being accused that chemo was a performance enhancer (it does take off the weight and save one the trouble of shaving for a while) you might be a bit ""in your face as well"". Now if we could just get him to abandon that idiot W who has none of Lance's mettle"

The ever-unraveling thread

"The original subject of this thread, ""Climbing Crow,"" was rock musician Sheryl Crow's climb up l'Alpe d'Huez.

However, the thread was hijacked by JP who redirected it toward Lance Armstrong. JP demonstrates a rather worrisome fixation with the man, down to very personal details. That Sheryl Crow has an intimate relationship with Lance appears to make her fair game for JP's ire.

For my part, I hold an unambiguous admiration for Lance's cycling skills. Since I don't know him I don't really know that he lacks a personality. I can only assume that someone who spends so much time training is not cultivating his mind. But we know how far assumptions will get you. My flip comment was intended to dampen JP's fire and return the thread to its ostensible subject, which it clearly failed to do.

As for dialogue, how does a string of invective monologues, punctuated by others' occasional efforts to lighten the mood, qualify? JP, if you have convinced me of anything, it's that Lance is probably a better man than I realize. And confirmed an already existing belief that a compulsive worship of athletic ability is morally suspect. Pour mon gout, ca sent un peu trop du fascisme.

But back to Sheryl, already.

A photo of Sheryl in cycling togs can be seen at http://www.sherylcrow.com/news.asp. She looks sharp--and notice the double-chain ring on that Trek. If I'd taken a double up Whiteface, I would have burned up. I really admire her strength and courage.

Pardonez-moi!

Carol, I am posting this WITHOUT the permission of John Herman – my 6th post for those that don’t care. S’OK with you?

Pardon my having a little fun with the TdF and our various selections. So sorry also that I “hijacked” the thread. If Lance had been dating say, SB Barrows, the Mayflower Madame, would we be listing to her comments on the TdF, AdH, etc ????? I shudder – well, not really. We seldom heard LA’s (ex-)wife comment on the TdF – she had no media standing, other than LA.

It’s all tangential hype and runs contrary to the essence of the race. Ultimately, only the race, the numbers and the blood, sweat and tears of the riders matter. (Sponsorship is another issue.) LA is one hell of a cyclist – let’s keep it “pro-velo!” Grammys, endorsements, significant others, political bents, choice of coffees or MMs, call girls, etc., do not figure into the equation. That’s my stance. I’d sit with the 99ers (LA), the Crash lovers (TH), any fans of any of the riders. What’s wrong with a rich mosaic of pluralism? We could, without malice, argue, boast, ridicule …. and all cheer together. Heck, I’m boosting for Strudel Man but think LA is looking more and more dominant. But still I say … GO JAN! LA’s girlfriend has nothing to do with this and I work to dilute this hype. She’s a rock star and so … we have to hear her comments on the TTT?!? She climbs AdH like so many others amateurs??? Tangential hype – and I oppose it. I will probably be unsuccessful in the face of the commercial juggernaut – and MY choice for #1 on the podium is looking dark. But it’s the TdF and I love it. Yes, even with the tangential hype. Give me velo-hype.

What’s wrong with a thread changing course? You yourself, with some help, have hijacked the hijacked by focusing on me. So what!?! I like the fact that the NYCC board has a spark now - from you, me (I think) and all the others. Monomaniacal conformity would be boring.

Now stop stalking me :-)

Rgds, JP

Sans rien dire du sexisme

Please, turn the rant mode off.

What!

Carol, Sexism! Where? I wouldn't want to hear Marla Streb's husband comment on a race she was in just becasue he was her husband.

Must you try and alienate me too! I'm just having a good time, despite you! Je ne comprend pas.

Over and out.

Ahem.

Just being jocular in making a point John. Sheesh! May I? And I guess I should use those emoticons: ;-) :-0 ;-p :-D

And yes, this is taking too much time. And with too little return.

My last post, unless I really get bored later (I have a cold and an injury - so I have time. And the TdF is on all day).

And ... over and out.

Mars Needs Women

Thanks to Judith for her on- and off-line comments.

Nonsensical banter has its time and place among friends. But some of us can't help but be disturbed by certain bad ideas--polluted trains of thought that spew bias and dishonesty into the communal air we all must breathe. Thus from time to time, I am compelled, like Anna Karenina, to throw myself in front of the charging locomotive.

Trying to maintain a position of moral superiority is a nuisance--and one that we women ought to let fall. I would like us--certainly myself--to have the liberty of carefree and even careless conduct without consequences, as with some of our comrades here.

It wasn't until my correspondence with Judith that I realized this imperative. So here is yet another reason, beyond gender parity, that I want to hear more women's voices on this message board. You gals are like me--of course different as individiuals, but different in ways I can learn from. I want to know how other women in the club think and feel about the things that affect us all.

Judith pointed out that verbosity is no guarantee of quality of discourse. And that in the end, wit is as important as wisdom. Nonetheless, for selfish reasons I hope to see more than four women among the Top 25 posters on this board very soon, for better or worse.

Carol

(This editorial is in no way pejorative toward the men in this club, especially those whose company I so much enjoy and who so generously and regularly supply me with technical, medical, and personal advice. You know who you are.)

if lance was dating courtney love...

"...he wouldn't have the energy to race the tdf.

sheryl has the face...but courtney has the body. courtney's ""america's sweetheart"" album beats sheryl's ""the very best of sheryl crow"" album hands down.

i would put my money on sheryl on the hills and on courtney on the sprints...and if the sprint got ugly, my money would be on courtney in the post-sprint fist fight. heck, i even think courtney could kick lance's butt in a fight.

Assuming she is free to leave the country (USA; no violating probation orders, etc.)....

He'd either be sharing a prison cell with David Millar while the French police raid his hotel room under the presumed suspicion he's guilty of posessing narcotics. That or alot more LA confidential ""expose"" books would be sold for sure.

The Rider for Courtney... Christophe Brandt

"From CyclingNews.com:

""Christophe Brandt(Lotto-Domo) has become the first rider to test positive during the Tour de France. The Belgian climber was controlled after the second stage from Charleroi to Namur on July 5, and traces of methadone, a pain killer, were found in his urine.""

Can't picture Courtney Love in a Cycling jersey & tights..

...which is a good thing.

on her ascent, she probably be half naked, ripping her cycling attire in interesting places.

And if WADA attempted to have her take a doping test, she'd kick their assos off the mountain. It wouldn't be a question of what she was on (other than the bike) but how much she was on.
