Does anyone know of insurance companies that will cover your bicycle (plus case) for its full value in case it is destroyed by an airline ? The airlines have limited liability and will not reimburse more than a couple of $$$. I have heard that some renter's insurances might cover it.

If you have home owner's or renter's insurance, check with your insurer - they can probably add a rider to cover it.

Trip insurance

A travel agent can refer you to an insurer who provides trip insurance, which covers losses related to your trip ranging from cancelled flights to illness to lost baggage. It's limited to the time and amount you specify. On a trip to Italy last year, I purchased some the day before I left--not that you should wait as long as I did. Sorry I don't remember who issued the policy.

trip insurance

I was required to get trip insurance for my TDF package tour. All of the policies I looked at have a $250 limit for lost luggage, which doesn't go that far when it comes to a bike. I'm pretty sure my renter's insurance will cover the bike, but I haven't confirmed. Thanks for the reminder!

airline loss or damage not covered

I just checked with my insurance provider. If my bike is stolen on the trip, it will be covered. However, loss or damage by the airline is not covered by my policy. Hmmmm.

Off premises insurance

"I bought what I believe others have posted as a rider. In my case it was called ""off premises insurance"" for my bikes, including my other valuables. It is part of my home owners insurance and in my case only cost me an additional $67.00 per year. You should definitely video tape or photograph your bike and case and record the serial number if you have one. The one post that recommends the wording ""replacement insurance"" is critical as well.

Good luck"

"You can get it covered with renters' insurance by a rider. Also, and very important, you have to specify ""replacement value"" if you expect to recover any meaningful $$$. I advise taking pics and listing components, too (for your records).
