Does anyone have thoughts on a smart way to bike in Apulia, Italy?

Should I bring my own bike or attempt to rent one there?
(It seems like such a hassle to carry all my luggage and a bike through the airport.)

Please let me know your opinions.

Many thanks,
Brad

Puglia

I'm going there in August as well, but I'll have my bike with me anyway because I will ride the alps before.
I'm from Italy so I know the situation a bit...in the south I doubt they will have any kind of nice machine to rent (if you can even find anything to rent at all), you might want to look into renting a bike in Rome or Milan from a nice bike shop, but it's going to cost a bit.
my suggestion is to bring your bike if you can...

good luck
Manuel

trip report?

If you're so inclined, a trip report (or even outline) would be great.
I'm archiving information for a future trip and always appreciate new, current routes, hotels, sights to see, etc.
Hope you have a great time.

We did a Cicismo tour in Puglia a number of years ago

It was good-we rented a tandem from Ciclismo--I am doubtful about renting a bike locally--try the internet--intl yellow pages--bici noleggio? or something like that & contact the bike rental cos & ask them to describe the bikes. There may be a good place in Umbria--some of the bike touring cos. rent from them.

Two other points:

1. It is in the Southern part of Italy--it may be quite hot in midsummer. Think about Northern Italy--lakes/mtns will be bearable. Islands of Elba and Sardinia will be warm but you'd be mostly near the sea & good beaches.

2. Since Madrid, most of the railroads in Europe have tightened up security on packages and luggage--they may insist that it be with you at all times which may make taking a bike very difficult--check it out beforehand.
