I use SPD pedals on my road bike.

my pair of Nike YVR shoe broke. Nike is being great about replacing them. However the model no longer exists it seems. So I can replace with a road Nike Ventoux or mtb Nike Kato II.

I'd like a nice mtb shoe for easier walking but the Kato is too much of a mtb shoe (with laces, and too prominent sole)

question is do people use the small spd cleats on road shoes? I imagine it does not make for easy walking but are there any disavantages to that combo?

Pedals, cleats, shoes

I think you would quickly ruin SH51 type cleats with non-recessed shoes. Shimano's SPD road cleats (SH71) have pontoons for protection and to make walking somewhat easier.

The pedal, cleat, and shoe all need to be compatible.

an equation

Last weekend's discovery: brass MTB cleats plus road shoes over Grand Central's marble stairs equals bad scene.

I recently swapped my Time ATAC MTB cleats onto my road shoes when my Carnac MTB shoes finally fell apart. They work ok, but clipping in is more difficult (no channel in the shoe bottom to help tiny cleat find pedal), I get a hot spot on longer rides right above the tiny cleat (which I never did with MTB shoes), and walking is really a pain, moreso than with road cleats on road shoes.

If you're using MTB pedals, get a pair of decent MTB shoes. You won't regret it.

FWIW,
Adam

If the shoe fits...

Or get a pair of ""normal"" looking shoes with a recess for the SPD cleat (such as the Shimano T092).

I love speedplay frogs and use them with sidi mtb shoes. I use them on my fixed gear and road bike as well as my mountain bike. Just love them.

The frogs save me from at least one embarassing fall a season :-)
