But not well

"""He was trailed by three Secret Service bodyguards on bicycles and others in a chase car.""

Wouldn't that be a SAG wagon?

Hard to say

From the looks of his bike, he's done a fair amount of cycling: clipless pedals and 2004 Dura Ace (I think) on a racing bike. Not quite beginners stuff (not that beginners don't buy equipment they're not ready for). My guess is he was advised not to wear a jersey because the rest of the non-cycling public wouldn't be able to relate.

John Kerry rides a Bike

"Senator Kerry is probably as serious a cyclist as his ambitions will allow. Last year he rode the first day of the Pan Mass Challenge. The distance for the day was 110 miles. I don't think he did the whole ride, but definitely got some good ""face-time"" with this particular consituency. I heard that his gear is pretty much top of the line including a custom American frame (not sure if Seven, Serotta or Merlin)."

Serotta

"He rides a serotta, (which he banged up this weekend in a spill).

And always seems to wear a t-shirt. I agree ""a man of the people"" probably shouldn't be seen in a spandex jersey."

Allez Kerry!

"""And always seems to wear a t-shirt. I agree ""a man of the people"" probably shouldn't be seen in a spandex jersey.""

True, Bush would end up using it against him in an ad.

""He rides a serotta, (which he banged up this weekend in a spill).""

I hear he scraped up his arm. No Purple Heart planned.

His cycling must be a nightmare for the Secret Service though. They should form a cacoon around him like USPS does for Lance on the ride into Paris.

""Chainwheel"""

He rides an orange bike like Christian E.

"He's smart to wear a T-shirt, so not to appear too ""Euro"" or ""French"".

I wonder if the Secret Service body guards keep their ""piece"" in the bottle cage or handle bar mounts.

Here is another picture of him on another Serotta– and check out the Campy setup!

At least the man is consistant in his indecisiveness. Check out all the suits in the background.

bad eyes

How can you tell that is campy?
The levers look shamano-ish to me.

The Red and Yellow CIII has Campy. The Orange Ottrott has 2004 10-sp D/A. You can see the Campy levers in some of the other photos.

Mr. Kerry travels with the CIII on his campaign plane, but the (new) Ottrott stays at home. He was on his Ottrott at the time of the crash, and apparently scuffed the left brifter.

And yes, the Ottrott is orange, but I prefer the all-steel CIII, of course.
