Hi,

I'd like to buy a bike but have a student budget. Can anyone recommend a place to buy a good used bike?

Thanks,

Laura

I recently donated a 50cm (+/-) vintage Trek road frame to East Village RAB. If it's your size, you might want to ask about it.

C'mon webmaster, this question gets asked every other week - if that's not the definition of FAQ, what is?

Message Board Search feature

C'mon webmaster, this question gets asked every other week - if that's not the definition of FAQ, what is?

So Evan, if I understand you correctly, you have just volunteered to compose (another) FAQ? ;-)

Nice idea, but Tim and I have our hands full with other website matters. I think there may be a solution avaliable already and possibly a better one at that.

To answer your question, one should use the message board's SEARCH feature.
I highly recommend using it before posting an inquiry.

Quite a bit of time was spent developing and implementing the search feature. Perhaps I'm a bit biased in writing this - but I think it works quite well and is easy to use.

Unlike a FAQ, the mesage board archive contents are a much more collabroative and dynamic effort (e.g. more than one point of view is expressed and the information, or progression thereof, is much more timely).

"Sure, you and I know where the search function is and how to use it; we also have a reasonably good idea what we're looking for and what we're going to find when we get there. Someone asking a question does not, and a suggestion to search the archives, that this topic was just discussed recently, has always struck me as something of a brush-off.

OTOH, a reply to the effect that ""we've compiled a list of local shops and websites for used bikes and it's right over there in the FAQ"" seems, *in my opinion*, quite a bit friendlier.

And yes, I'll compile the list."

Thank you!

Point well received. Having a choice is good. Even better, letting the respective users decide what's best. Who could argue with that?

Thank you very much for pitching in, Evan. It would be of great benefit to the Resources section of the club website. (And yes, Resources _sorely_ needs to be updated and is on our to-do list)

www.preownedbikes.com

"I got a near new colnago at the beggining of the season for 1/2 the price of what it cost new at: www.preownedbikes.com

They offer pretty serious, late model used bikes, so you may not find what you want at a ""student"" budget. But I must say they offer expetional value. They do go through them and refurb anything that needs it and offer a lifetime warranty on a lot of thier frames. Can't say enough good bout them."
