Due to low temperatures, unless things are forecast to be warmer than expected; we are going to Nyack. The temperatures in the morning will be below freezing. Things are not expected to warm sufficently through the day. We can do some hills on the way up.
Dress like it's winter.
If things change on the weather plane I will update the ride.
Saturday's A ride to Whippoorwill going to Nyack...
As long as it will be cold and we will be doing less mileage, why not make the start time 9:30 or 10am instead of 9?
Why not make the start time 9:30 or 10am instead of 9?Chris brought up this very point. My response was that not everbody has email and might show up on time on a cold morning waiting for the ride to commence. How about not starting till 9:15? If you want to meet us at 110th St and CPW at 9:23 you can buy even more time. We can discuss cold weather ride time change policy over lunch. Then we can throw it up to the Board and see if they think it will be all right to change ride time the night before the ride.
"Good thought, Hank. On the other hand, anyone without a computer is likely to still think that you are intending on heading up toward Whippoorwill. Given the temperature, they would probably decide not to go on your ride, and head up to Nyack!
This does seem like a topic worthy of developing a policy for going forward. Perhaps something as simple as ""check message board night before ride for possible change of route/start time. For the computerless among our riders, call ride leader up until (whatever time works for that leader)."""
Tomorrow we all test out our clothing strategies for cold weather. Anything less than success is suffering. Carry something extra just in case you miscalculated.
The ride listing was very clear that the destination would probably be changed to Nyack. We know that it's not cold enough to cancel, especially since tomorrow will be colder. There's no need for most people to check here. But I did and I'm still confused. Is the ride now scheduled to leave at 9:15 sharp?? Those that get there at 9:00am expecting a group to ride with shouldn't be made to wait any longer than that in this, or any other, weather
When was the last time you saw an NYCC ride leave sharply on the time listed?
I can't remember a ride leaving less than 10 minutes past the posted time. So we will make it 15.
Be ready to leave The Boathouse at 9:15 or be at 110th St and CPW at 9:23.
Isn't that what I posted in my prior message?
"Hank, what you posted previously had three ""?'s"" in it, each one after a time, and Ron appeared to still be asking for a later start. I know many rides start 10 to 15 minutes late. What I wanted to know was if this was going to be a 9:15 ride leaving at 9:30 or not.
The difference in temperature between starting at 9:00am vs 10:00am or finishing at 2:00pm vs 3:00pm, when the temps were dropping already, isn't great enough to warrant the inconvenience to those who show up at the listed time."
I thought that by saying 9:23 at CPW and 110 St anybody reading it would know that we were leaving promptly at 9:15. But this was not so. Some people showed at the posted time, only checking their email last night. Tom's email is down so he couldn't follow last minute changes. In this age of instant communications we can not rely on last minute time changes to reach all riders. It is one thing to change a desination but quite another to fuss with the start time.
Early winter rides surprise me in that getting dressed and out the door takes way longer than anticipated. No doubt I am not alone on this detail. The upshot is that riders might be late with the best intentions of being prompt.
And waiting in the cold is nasty. Luckily, today was not very windy.
On debating this issue while waiting for the 9:15 witching hour, either Todd or Tom said that if riders are late they can form their own group. And Tom mentioned that if rides start promptly the signal will get out to the members to be on time. If rides don't start on time riders will get that signal and show up accordingly. I think The I Ching says something to the effect that when the ruler is harsh the people are cunning, when the ruler is lax the people are lazy.
The bottom line is not to change ride times unless there is an immediate weather issue and to start rides promptly.
I stand corrected.
