going to be in NYC for 3 wks and want to rent a bike during that time. Commuting from Battery Park to 23rd St by Madison, and other pleasures.

Road or mtn bike, not fussy, just has to be rideable.
Is this possible?
Are there any bike shops that could help me?

thanks all.

Gotham Bikes - Downtown

Gotham bikes, pretty much right in the neighborhood you will be, rents Bianchi Milano city bikes and Specialized (I think) mountain bikes. They might do you a deal for an extended rental. They are at 112 West Broadway, btwn Duane and Reade, phone 212-732-2453. Good luck.

Parking

Nice ride from there to here but not many good places to leave the bike at 23rd and Mad (I work at 24th and Madison). Bring a really good lock

This probably takes the biscuit, but.....

Well, I've always been brought up to believe that you rarely get anything in life unless you ask, so, here goes.

Would you, by any chance, have any room in your luggage to bring over from England my LeMond steel Alpe D'Huez frame (no fork or components, just frame), which is sitting in my brother's loft in Ealing, west London? If so, please e-mail me privately. I'll buy you lunch or dinner for your trouble.

Otherwise, enjoy your trip to NYC and your bike commuting.

thkx, appreciate the replies.

Michael - what's the ride from Battery Park?
I hear there's a path up the bank of the Hudson, is it quick to go up to 23rd and then across to Madison, or better to go straight thru town?

Am hoping that my firm has at least some underground parking with a couple of drainpipes to lock up to, but i guess if I rent something i'd be covered for theft if the bike is secured ....

cheers

Hudson Bike Path

The BEST route would probably be up the Hudson Bike path and then straight across 23rd... but I would be inclined to go early. Otherwise I would certainly still take the Hudson path but come over on a less traffic filled crosstown street (18th or so) 23rd gets congested and dangerous for a cyclist whose reactions are a bit disoriented (I lived in London for a while, the wrong side of the road thing took a bit of adjustment).

As far as security, depends on the building but it sounds like you'll be in 1 Madison or 11 Madison, neither of which has parking. Bikes locked up outside have a tendency to get lost or lose parts (seats, wheels etc)... There is supposed to be some parking available at 6th and 20's somewhere. I'll check that out, otherwise I'd advise a quick jaunt on the Hudson bikeway in the AM then a subway to work. This club does very good long rides on the weekends so join us

just checked .. 1 Madison it is, so no parking.

Shame, as it sounds a nice commute. Still, I'll check out the bike stores on Monday and see what the score is.

A weekend ride would be great - I'll see if I can fit one in.

cheers
