This from www.viewsfromthetop.com northeastern US hiking website.

People confusing coyotes and mt. lions?? hahaha
I would almost expect there to be mt. lion sightings in the catskills as well. Even down here in Nyack, my father and a group of hikers spotted one- now that's bizaar! And I can tell you for sure that they definitely know the difference from a coyote.
As far as bobcats- I used to work near Wantage, in the poconos area at Peters Valley- and there were a number of bobcat sightings. You could also hear them at night.
Either way tho, they are both rare, and consider yourself lucky if you see one (and arent being chased by one )

---I heard they only go for Shimano equipted riders...

animal sightings - 4 legged and 2 wheeled variety

Well Hank, the next time we're climbing some hill, say Gate Hill, I'll be sure to keep a close look out and head-off any hunters from confusing you for a 2-wheeled mountain goat.

The animals you mention are all various Rockland County high school team mascots. (Mine was the mtn lion) There must be something to it. Can't say I've seen any real bobcats or mt lions when I lived there, but once upon a time I would see a deer on frequent occassion (hopefully not crossing my path while driving) and maybe a bear or two. Sadly, with all of the R.E. development in Rockland, deer sightings have become much less frequent.

Lemme see if I have a bright orange vest to lend you..

High School mascot

Peter,
I graduated Mount Everett High School in Sheffield. Our mascot was the earthworm. After all these years I now can say that with a straight face...

which is worse?

Earthworm - that's funny. My college mascot was a turtle.

ROFL = Rolling On Floor Laughing (I guess)

Questionable

While the legacy of mountains lions in the North East is quite prevalent in location names (Catskills, Catamount for example), mountain lions have been officially extinct in the region for about 100 years. Yes, there have been many, many sitings but there has not been a single trapping or a genuine photograph to substantiate their existence. Nor has any other real physical evidence been discovered, such as identifiable scat or fur. Tracks have been scarce and inconclusive. While I would love to believe mountain lions are not extinct in the North East, (as well as with thylacines in Tasmania), the evidence for a breeding population is not there. At the very best, some purported sightings were attributed to a pet that was either released by its owner or escaped, which happened about 10 years ago in Philadelphia. This animal was never caught and being ill-equipped to survive in the wild, probably died relatively soon.

MOUNTAIN LIONS

The only problem with and/or danger from the mountain lions and bobcats is when watching the submarine races in the Hudson, from the banks of the river, late at night!
