I will be riding the 100 mile route for ENY tomorrow morning at 17-18 if anyone is intersted. I cannot make the group scouting ride next weekend. I will pass the boathouse around 8 and Sukara Park about 8:15. Email or call 212-593-0986.
I did the 100 mile route today and found the cue sheet to be fine with a couple of corrections that I will forward later if you want to make it perfect.
This is basically the Steinberg Mott Farm ride and it has over 3,000 vertical feet before lunch, 4,700 total.
Of course, the Saddle River rest stop was not open nor anything else and I had to wait until 33 miles to get some food at Cherry and 59.
By the time I got to the lake at 61 miles, I was bonking and of course, there was not rood there either.
People are going to have to watch their intakes in miles 40-60 because the stretch between Saddle River and the Lake is long and hard.
I suggest that leaders take a pocket food break if they do not have to stop otherwise because the roads are very demanding and it is not easy to eat on the run in that terrain.
Also, people really have to watch their backs in the right curves on 9W; I nearly got clobbered by a guy in a pickup truck pulling a long boat trailer that he let drift into the shoulder lane.
I averaged under 15 miles an hour, so the actual moving time was over 4 hours to the Lake and almost another 3 hours back to the start.
With brief stops, the whole ride was over 8 hours.
Fred just noted that this has some of the elements of his ride but also has many differences and the travel is in the opposite direction; ENY is clockwise and his ride is counter clockwise.
If you would like to see a comparison with the actual Steinberg Mott Farm Route, email me and I will send you both plotted on a map.
I also have the ENY 100 available seperately on a map with the ride profile.
ENY 100 Mile Ride
Just after you drop back onto 9W from all the climbs is the welcome red sight of The Cove Deli. Gives one the boost to get through to the lake (about another 10 miles)
How were the pavement markings between Saddle River and the lake??
Once I started noticing them, the purple ENY 100 marks confirmed the route for me but were easy to overlook because they are fairly dark. There were much bolder red, white and yellow markings that I often saw. Are they ours?
I should have stopped at the Cove Deli; that is a good suggestion and landmark to look for. At that point you will be 2 hours past the first rest stop and still almost an hour from the lake.
"Robert: There are no purple marks out there. With a little luck there are lots of freshly painted distinctive white and red arrows surrounding the letters ""ENY"" marking the Century route, starting at Sakura Park, ending at the GWB and then resuming at the turn from Glen Avenue onto East Saddle River Rd and ending again at the turn from DeWolf onto Old Tappan on the return. This weekend, signs will be posted to mark the unpainted portion of the route, which is all in Bergen County. At various places, mostly in Bergen County, there are remnants of painted marks from previous years' rides, some of which may have faded to a gentle mauve or violet. The faded arrows are all (we hope) consistent with the current route so they shouldn't lead to any confusion. The 50-mile (yellow) and metric century (green) routes are similarly painted and will be similarly posted. Russ"
"I was only writing of the pavement pavement markings between Saddle River and the lake as asked above. They are red ENY arrows. There are lots of freshly painted distinctive white and red arrows surrounding the letters ""ENY"" marking the rest of the route after the lake."
