I'm sure some of you already know this but I had to share it because I'm so psyched. I had 3 flats this past weekend - unbelievable. Using 1 or 2 co2 cartridges got to be expensive.
I read about tip to buy them in Wal-Mart. They sell them in the hunting/fishing area where the pellet guns are. I bought a 25 pack of 12g cartridges for $11. As opposed to getting a deal on nashbar or supergo.com for a $5 / 3 pack. Do the math - it comes out to about 44 cents per cartridge instead of almost $2.00 each.
Just a tip in case anyone hadn't heard....

If you get the co2 pellet gun, too, you can use it to blast out the windshields of dangerous drivers as they go by, eliminating the need to use the Internet. (See another thread on this bulletin board regarding a dangerous drivers' registry.)
"
Is that a joke????? I was being serious. If you use a CO2 pump, this is a good way to save a few bucks.
I don't get the thing about blasting out windshields or the pellet gun.....
Are the cartridges threaded?? My chuck needs threads.
But you are right, it can get costly. Maybe I'll buy a new chuck.
These are non threaded. My pump comes with a small cradle that you screw onto the pump head to keep the co2 tight. Even that style is only about $15 at any online catalog store. They don't take up much space eihter...
I have been using 16g cartridges and hardly get the pressure to 100 psi. Will a 12g cartridge be enough? What kind of pressure can a 12g get into a 700x23?
Erik
I carry a mini-pump and non-threaded CO2. 20 pump-strokes + the CO2 gets me (or a fellow rider) up to pressure (even a 700x23) and back on the road quickly. The pump is also useful after you've used up your last CO2 (but I carry a Schraeder adapter as well.)*
I've been buying CO2 in quantity from Wal-Mart gun counters for years. It's cheap enough that I share freely.
Yes, this means more stuff, alas.
* People who ride with me have been amazed at what's to be found in my saddle-wedge.
"A decent CO2 pump is now available at www.sierratradingpost.com for just under $5. Just search ""CO2"". It's in their bargain barn dept."
