"The following was to be a post to a thread that has been deleted with the title ""Bike 4 Peace Bike Against the War Contigent 5 Boro Bike tour"":

A citizen is defined by his/her relations to others. I always thought that a good cyclist is a good citizen that chooses to ride a bicycle. You may decide to ignore your environment (the world and it inhabitants) as you ride, but this will be your personal choice.

I believe that this board is the right place to post any message related to cycling that may be relevant to other cyclists, and far from being a bike activist (or any kind of activist for that matter) I feel thrilled and hopeful when people voice their opinions and they are convinced that it matters.

About sports not being a platform for opinions. Well, things are what you make of them. When National Anthems are played in sports events athletes show respect and acceptance for their country. should this be a given? Do 1968 Olympics ring a bell?

I've been a member for NYCC many years and lead many rides....

"...the thing that we dont't talk about when we are in a group ride is Politics.

I go out to ride w/ my friends and have fun because we share a common interest and that is ""CYCLING"" not politics, religion, 1968 Olypics, etc..etc..

If you want to voice your opinion about the war....please don't do it here. I believe that the White House has a Web page. You might want to give your opinions there."

politics?

"I talk about lots of things on a group ride, politics being one of them. If you don't like the post, you don't have to read it but its certainly no argument for censoring the message board. Especially seeing as it was a cycling related post.

Webmaster: how about you start getting nasty with blatant promotional posts (Yoga Workshop for athletes) and mindless tat (Lance & Kristin) instead?"

Both post WERE off the radar, the webmaster is doing fine

An excellent point, Jorge. Actually, I don't mind reading the promotions or the tat. But I do mind when people start deciding what I can and cannot read by deleting posts from the board.

Bias

>But I do mind when people start deciding what I can and cannot read.

Well,–its happening every day. Even in a free society like ours, there is always going to be some form of bias on what gets published or reported. Somewhere along the line, someone has to decide what is allowed, even on this MB.

QT is making a somewhat convincing case and the message is left on. Some people are choosing to respond, most choose not to.

... Is everybody happy?

Tolerance

NO WORLD ON THE WAR–NOT IN OUR NAME!
And whose name is that I may ask?

The thread was originally pulled for the time being because, given the conventional wisdom of the message board participants, there is little tolerance for folks who post bombast anonymously. Prior to the somewhat distant discussions about anonymous posts, a very laissez faire approach was taken, which by general consensus was not the solution. In the meantime, I temporarily pulled the thread while consulting with other NYCC staff members who felt is would be a good thing that it remain, so there it is. Perhaps I am at fault pulling the trigger too soon. It goes without saying, it’s definitely not an enviable task to have rest on one’s shoulders for sure and like everyone else I am only human. Anyway, the most remarkable issue with the thread is the thoughtful and constructive replies that followed. Let’s hope it stays that way. Thanks for expressing your interest; such feedback is very helpful.

talk

"I failed to copy the post I was answering to (at the bottom now) so mine could be read in context. I wrote it not sure if I was going to send it, it was when the thread got deleted when I decided to do it. You see, I was talking about the right to talk about things, in this case a cycling event, and that is why I posted to this board.

is religion also a forbidden subject? then maybe you should think about changing your email address from ""[email protected]"" to perhaps ""[email protected]"", don't know, just an idea.

just to make things clearer to you: I am not talking about religion here, just about consistency.

Campagnolo vs. Shimano debate someone?

Not the place, nor the format......bike riding is a sport not a platform for opinions..........next thing you know cyclist will be across lines.... who's for the war and whose against it......think about it, maybe a riding buddy of yours is not of the same opinion........maybe a car driver who is for the war will be ""bumping"" into bicyles on the road.............SO GET SMART............

Give us a break and grow up…And why should you demote and lower

yourself to ridicule my attached e-mail address. I see no point on this thread and I hope it gets deleted too.

I can only conclude that you are lacking attention on this board. Tim Andon is right. You should GET SMART .

I know we will... and we will remember your name because we’ll make sure to put you on the back of the pace line for the sake of the other riders (should you ruin our ride w/ your political babbles).
