Thats Sad

and a shame for any kids to have to grow up with parents who are split up - but as good as a bike rider as Lance is ( and he certainly is that) you gotta admit he does come across as a royal pain in the ass at times (shoot me down now!) -

But you're right it is really sad when marriages don't work out

Re: That's sad

I agree that Lance was a little on the abrasive side...but that's gave him character and why people respected him. He was rough, but was good natured and always a great help. Sorry to hear the bad news. Wish the best for him, his wife and kid.

Well, his first love was always the bike, was it not?

Seriously, though, I am very sad to see this.

"Lance wants everyone to know that, ""My focus will now be 3-fold: my children, my job (something to do with a bike), and the fight against cancer.""

Read this quote from Lance

"""I want to die at a hundred years old with an American flag on my back and the star of Texas on my helmet, after screaming down an Alpine descent on a bicycle at seventy-five miles per hour. I want to cross one last finish line as my stud wife and ten children applaud..."" --from ""It's Not About The Bike""

Quote from Lance

"Yes, these words say a lot about Lance's character and why his marriage didn't work out. They show arrogance, self-absorption, and stupidity. A ""stud"" is originally a farm where horses are bred; it has come to be used for a stallion kept for breeding (and hence, for a virile, sexually active man). Here it's incorrectly used for a woman, but the implication is obvious. Lance, who can't even impregnate his wife in the normal way, is keeping her for breeding children (ten of them). Of course, even after she has done this, she and the children are only there to applaud him.

Here is another snippet: ""It makes me crazy when my wife, Kristin, drives her car, because she brakes at all the yellow caution lights, while I squirm impatiently in the passenger seat. 'Come on, don't be a skirt,' I tell her."" Very gentlemanly.

You may admire Lance for his cycling achievements, his fight against cancer, his public work. But how can you not be disgusted by the selfishness and pettiness he shows throughout his book? How could you have expected his wife, unless she too was blinded with hero worship, to put up with him?"

"Lance personal life is ""NON OF OUR BUSINESS"""

You guys are beginning to sound like those French National Inquirer Media accusing him of doping.

Would you like it if Lance intrudes with your personal life and comments on how you can’t impregnate your wife, etc, etc, etc…?

Non? Mais si!

"""Would you like it if Lance intrudes with your personal life and comments on how you can’t impregnate your wife, etc, etc, etc…? ""

Hey Five-O, my wife doesn't want to be impregnated, so it doesn't matter.

But you're off the mark here. No one posting on this BB so far has made media campaigns and written books detailing our intimate lives. Lance is a public figure who has put these matters out on display. Nothing unfair about our discussing it."

Did you say truck driver? Send me your e-mail address, I'll invite you.

So now who has cabin fever? Pray for decent weather tomorrow.

"FIVE" what? (not verified)
Lance who?

You are right -- Lance's personal life is none of our business. That's why I don't understand the purpose of Jay's original post or the next 4 posters who were sad about Lance's separation. Why were they sad? Why does anyone care whether he gets back together with his wife? It's none of our business.

BOGUS

I've heard it said that break-ups in long term relationships are usually a real downer. It's sad for Lance and Kirsten because apparently, at one time, they loved each other and thought they'd spend the rest of their lives together.

Lance & Kristin

My takeaway on this is that people in the limelight are very driven and probably hard to live with. So the rest of us should be grateful that we're just poor anonymous slobs.

Opposite View

My take was the exact opposite. Kristin knew what she was getting into when she met Lance, and now that she has the money and the kids she is making an issue about spending 6 months a year in Europe, plus the time Lance is away due to charity work, interviews, business deals, ...

Lance should take a cue from Jaja

Laurent Jalabert, the present day Don Mattingly of French pro cycling--never won the Tour, but got yellow / green / polka dot jerseys and won quite a number of races. Aside from support from the pros, he seems to have the family/relative/brother (who's a pro racer) moral support when he raced. Now retired, Jaja looks forward to spending more time with his wife and children.

Wish I spoke French, but here's a related website:

Hope things work out with Lance and Kristin.

And a cynical one at that!

"Come come John! You're assuming two unprovable facts. First, that Kristin ""knew what she was getting into"" when she married Lance -- as if she could divine the future in which he would become an international sports celebrity by winning the TdF four times in a row, etc. etc. Second, that Kristin's motivations were purely mercenary. (This is a very ugly accusation, but I'll leave that one alone.)

I doubt that anyone who possessed both of these demonic tendencies would settle for some guy with a few million bucks at most.

People always hope for the best, but half of all marriages don't work out. It happens, and it takes courage for both parties to admit it and try to move on.

Making Assumptions..........

"Carol, I couldn't exptrapolate either assumption from John's posting.

Regarding the first contention - I would agree that nobody, not even Kristin could devine the events that unfolded in the years 1999-2002. But I think what she ""knew what she was getting into"" was that she marrying a man that had incredible drive and talent, but a man who might not have long to live.

Yes, to suggest Kristin is a mercenary is ugly -- but John did not make that suggestion. To me, given that Lance's success has generated stability regarding material needs, Kristin would like the family experience a stable home life, and not travel to the extent it has in previous years, especially with three young children.

None of these possibilites could be called demonic.

I think that Kristen and Lance's marriage will last, despite that Lance is not retiring, and will continue his profession, but train without his family. This is a situation many couples deal with every day, where work/profession keeps the couple apart. It's possible that by stating now ""We are separated"" there will be less media surrounding Kristen and the children with repetative questions. No divorce papers haven't been served.

As to whether Lance will win a 5th TDF or whether Kristen and Lance's will reunite during or after the cycling season; to quote a chess maxim, that remains in the laps of the gods."

Right On!

"Carol;

My post was a purposeful extreme response to Maggie's contention that ""people in the limelight are very driven and probably hard to live with"", implying the problem was with Lance. My real postion is much closer to yours: people meet, form relationships, then circumstances change and relationships are altered. Is it Lance's fault, no. Is it Kristin's fault no. Can they work this out? Let's hope that what solution they decide upon is best for them and their children."
