This forum requiring an email address on posts is all very well apart from:

1) spambots will pick up email address on here and the poor poster will be deluged with even more junk mail than we currently have to put up with and

2) whats the point of requiring an email address when anyone can type in a false address (ie the address I've put in above).

Extra typing for no actual benefit?

Well, my yahoo email account, [email protected] is already deluged with junk mail, so it is of little personal concern.

If such were not the case, then I would set up another free email address account for such purpose. Or alternatively, I could mask my read email address, i.e. peter_mma_AT_yahoo_DOT_com, [email protected], [email protected], to name a few examples.

Even if I were to never *publicly* reveal my email address online whether here, online shopping, or actually send an email under such address, it is still at the mercy of spammers. Some spam bots will randomly construct email addresses and blindly send mail to them such as: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]... so on so forth.

whats the point of requiring an email address when anyone can type in a false address (ie the address I've put in above).

The point is it simply reveals more information about the character of the person making the post. Screen name + email address, you decide the validity of the email address, the sincerity, intentions, creditability, and what have you of the message poster.

Extra typing for no actual benefit?

Ergo, benefit for the reading audience. Also, if you have some other issues with the message board that you do not feel comfortable discussing publicly, please contact me. I'd be more than willing to help. And, of course, you know where to reach me ;-)

SOLOMON'S SOLUTION ??

Some forums require registration – you apply by submitting name, residence, screenname, your password, etc., ALONG WITH your real email address. An unlock code is sent to this address and then, and only then may you post.

This keeps the poster anon if he/she likes, because you do not have to use your real name as your screenname; but anon. relates only to the readers at large. The webgod has the goods on every poster. And can act to ID, warn, punish, banish, etc. an overt abuser.

There are ways around this I hear, playing with tags and cookies. I am not up on this. Nor am I up on the cost of implementing and maintaining this.

But it seems to work well within other forums.
