MNRR limitations on July 4th- please read if you are going to Cold Spring
To everyone, including members who are participating in the Cold Spring event on July 4th:
MNRR has given us very limited capacity for bike transport on this day for the Cold Spring line. Unless you have registered ON THE RIDE SUBMISSION PAGE FOR A SPECIFIC POSTED RIDE, you will not be able to use MNRR on the Cold Spring line on this day.
Today's quiz question: Has a Grand Tour ever knowingly accepted a woman?
You're all doing so well, I have no need to answer the past quiz questions. This one is a bit tricky so I may have to...but no googling. Hmm, I wonder what google would turn up?
A Supreme Court opinion. (This is not today's quiz question. )
With the Supreme Court being the headline in today's news, here's an opinion by one of the justices when asked why he rides a bicycle:
"The advantages? Exercise, no parking problems, gas prices, it's fun. An automobile is expensive. You have to find a place to park and it's not fun. So why not ride a bicycle? I recommend it." -Justice Stephen G. Breyer
Map/cuesheet for Saturday's Blue Hill ride. Also, bring a lightweight lock!
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/blue-hill-the-indirect-way
To see the cue sheet, switch to "mi" from "km" in the "options" control in the upper-right, click on the "Show" pull-down menu, then select "Cue Sheet".
Weather's looking good, btw! But also good for an early start.
Also, I failed to mention in the ride notes that at Blue Hill you are obliged to leave your bike at a bike rack near the gatehouse controlling entry. It's within sight of an attendant, but bring a lightweight lock just in case, if you have one handy.
Cheers,
Matt
Looking for Cue sheet for ride to Montauk
Considering posting ride for Monday or Tuesday if I can get a cue sheet and some interest by others. B16
GWB weekday actual opening time
I know the posted time for the GWB to open is 6:00 a.m. However, looking for experience from those who ride regularly during the week to see if it is often open earlier, and if so, how much earlier. I've heard I can reliably get away with 5:45, hoping for even earlier. I'm prepared to wait if it isn't open, but thought I'd call on experience. Thanks much.
River Road Raspberries Ripe!
They're popping out now and very tasty. Stop and grab some for a quick energy boost before they're all gone.
Biking Safely----Something to Consider
I had an opportunity the other day to speak with an EMT from Englewood or Englewood Cliffs. He told me his crew covers 9W and there are a lot of bicycle/car accidents. I asked him if he had an opinion on the causes of the crashes and whether cyclists or drivers were more to blame. He said that in his experience the collisions were due to inattention by the cyclists and drivers and almost equally divided. He said that most of the accidents occurred because either the driver or the cyclist lost focus and the cyclists wandered onto the roadway or the car into the shoulder/bike lane. This is just his opinion, and it does not excuse careless driving by motorists, nor does it mean that cyclists should not be protected if they enter the roadway from the shoul
River Road construction (this is going to confuse a lot of people)
Just a warning to cyclists coming up from anyplace in Jersey South of GWB on River Rd. they've torn up a good 4-5 miles of road with lane closures tons of traffic congestion. You'd probably be best off finding another way around like Blvd East/Palisade Ave. if you have the option.
Again...this isn't the River Road everyone rides to Piermont (Palisade Parkway) it's the River Road that runs down through Edgewater.
