Friday at 8pm - no B-STS news yet
Weather is kinda sketchy for our start tomorrow, but a bunch of us are schedule limited and it'll likely be rideable weather. (Very light rain or just damp pavement) So there is no reschedule planned, we are still aiming to start at 9am.
But make sure to check again tomorrow morning early! Because you never know what's going to happen with these close forecasts...
No longer seeking Central Park
I was advised that policy is for rides to be scheduled when the park is least crowded. More information at the following link:

The Bald Eagles and News on River Road For the Next Two Months
And good news indeed. In order to afford the nesting eagles as much protection from human interference as possible, and until the eaglets have fledged, the PIPC will be keeping the gates closed to vehicles for the Drive One section of River Road—between Englewood Cliffs and the circle at the base of Alpine, until approximately the second week of June. As reported in another thread, cyclists are now welcome to ride through those gates without fear of being ticketed. So we will have the majority of River Road to ourselves for the next 7 weeks or so.
Yet another cyclist commits suicide by, as the NYPD says, "collid(ing) into [the] rear tire of a tractor trailer."
All too predictably, the NYPD report states the cyclist rode into the truck. It's always this way, isn't it? That's because we're stupid, don't know how to ride our bikes, or we're suicidal. But this is soooo typical of mindless, skewed, biased, inaccurate, and, may I say? stupid NYPD reports on the deaths of and injuries to cyclists by drivers. Oh, so the truck wasn't even allowed to be on the street? OK, we're gonna hit that driver with a wallop of a punishment. How does a $200 fine and a 30 day suspension of his driver's license sound? Too punitive? I thought so.
Last Minute Ride Sign In Form
If we decide to have a club ride at the last minute or day before, is it possible to bring a blank sign up sheet for that ride and post it after the ride has happened?
If so, where would I find a blank sign up sheet these days?
Thanks!
Kissena Velodrome Questions
I would like to try out the Kissena Velodrome and maybe even try racing, but both the NYC Parks website and the Kissena website are a bit light on details.
My questions are:
- What are the days/hours it is open to the public?
- Is a track bike required at all times? If so, must it be a fixed gear and have no brake?
- Do they have loaner bikes? If so, are there small sizes for a 5'4'' boy (I want to bring my son)?
- For racing, is a track bike with a fixed gear (e.g. no freewheel) and no brake required?
Thanks
River Road closed
Hey all,
River Road was closed this morning 4/20 just before the Great Wall due to a rock slide. Not sure when it will reopen.
Berkshires Weekend Informational - Tomorrow, 4/20
Please join us for our Berkshires Weekend Informational Session - TOMORROW!
Whether you are thinking about going to the Berkshires, or not, stop by and hang out with us for an evening. We'll be discussing all things Berkshires (and I'm certain a few things not Berkshires, as well). Sign-up via NYCC's homepage: https://nycc.org/node/78764
Update on Ticketing and Future Use of River Road
We two – Bob Schmon and Charles Komanoff – met last Friday at the Alpine Police Station with Jim Hall, executive director of The Palisades Interstate Park Commission. The meeting was held at our request to discuss the conditions under which the middle section of Henry Hudson Drive (River Road), the section identified as “Drive One” by the PIPC, would be closed to cyclists, and ticketing policies by park police under those circumstances. (To put the purpose of the meeting in further context we refer to the thread, “Ticketing on River Road,” https://nycc.org/message-board/ticketing-river-road/78722.)
Is that a motor in your seat tube? Or are you just excited about the ride?
